Happy new year! You’re fired.
So saturday, I’m unemployed. Last day with the company is friday.
I will be speaking with people from another division of the same company, who can use me, and if they can afford me, they’ll take me on. In the meantime I’ve spoken with other folks about other possibilities.
My boss almost cried. We have a fifteen year relationship, and he hated to let me go- but they have had enough trouble that only the folks with their boots actually on the ground will keep working. And while I spend a lot of boots-on-the-ground time, most of what i do is pretty etherial, these days.
It will actually be good to be back to doing more field work, and I have other possibilities as well- but I will keep y’all posted. Keep me in your thoughts.

My condolences, OG, but I’m sure you’ll land on your feet (w/the boots on)!
I had a couple of colleagues in another company got the word on December 22nd- Merry F’n Christmas for them.
Best of luck…
On the bright side, you’ll have more time for blogging…
Hopefully that phase won’t last TOO long :-)
Dude, that sucks. That really, really sucks. I hope everything works out for you.
Hang tough big boy.
That’s a shitty way to start the new year.
Oh NO, Ogger. I’m so sorry.
If you need a writing gig, I have one in mind that you might like. Hit me up for deets later.
Hey man, sorry to hear that.
The corp life there has stunk for a little while now.
I have your number, so we will keep in touch.

I feel your pain. Got hired at a big health insurance company on contract to hire. Contract was for 90 day and interviewed 3 times. When I start they said we thought we would change where we were going to put you and put you on another team. Oh, and by the way, they don’t use any of your skill set. Two weeks and my recruiter and her boss showed up and that was it. Didn’t even get to finish the day. Needless to say I’ll never get insurance from them again. One of the Wellmark clones for any one keeping score.
Uggh
og,
1. Why is it ALWAYS right after the 1st of the year?!?! I got laid off on Jan. 4… (NOT this year; back in Y2K).
2. They gave you the news on Monday and expect you to finish out the week? That says a lot about your work ethic.
3. Best of luck, and if the other division thing doesn’t pan out give a yell. I don’t have a lot of contacts in Indiana but I could make some calls…
[…] Og, the Neanderpundit, just got the axe. […]
Send me a resume.
Oy, sorry to hear that. I was unemployed twice last year, so I know how you feel. On the up side, I’m sure you won’t be down for long. Take a few days to chill, then get out and bust ass. You’ll have a new job before you know it.
Been there, know how much it sucks. It’s hell.
You are officially in my prayers. Best of luck, buddy.
Aw, man Og. I’ll keep you in my thoughts. Keep us posted.
I know this will barely phase you. Nevertheless… bummer, man.

The fact that they kept you through the holidays means that they are not total scum. My previous boss was total scum. He liked to fire people two weeks before Christmas so he would not have to pay them holidays or give them any checks the following year (kept his unemployment expense down). Fortunately I only lasted through three Decembers with him. I had the honor of being let go in July. My blood pressure DROPPED twenty points after I got fired.
Shoot me an email.
My contacts in Indiana are mostly agricultural, but I do know some folks in electric utilities as well as at Purdue U.
let me know if I can help
I went through the same last year.
I work in the industrial field, let me know if I can be of any assistance. You know my email.
All things considered, your employer sounds like decent folk dealing with a tough situation. I’ve worked for places I was glad to get laid off from.
Good luck. We’re all pulling for you.
Fuck! Well, look at it this way, every dollar you take in unemployment is one Pelosi and her Politburo can’t spend…
Damn, Og. That really sucks.I’m so sorry.
swmbo
In my thoughts, as always.
Going through the same thing here. Good luck.
Good luck with that; some time back I got dumped after 18 years and had to find a completely new career. Hang in there, you strike me as someone who will land on his feet if given half a chance.
Just Damn! Hate to hear this, Og. I’m betting you’ll land on your feet, but good luck anyhow.
Holy crap – I don’t manage to read blogs for a couple days and the world starts going to hell in a hand basket! I’m really sorry to hear this Og – I hope you can find something great very quickly.
Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. Prayers sent your way in the meantime.
Oh good grief! I’ll be sending positive thoughts your way (and a few shouts up to the Big Guy). Hang in there!
Let me know if I can help Og. I’ll look in my circles but I’m sure you’re tuned in to the industry.
That bites. If I can help in any way, shape or form, please let me know.
:o
Oh wow. I don’t get a chance to log on for a bit and I comeback to find this.
I’m very sorry to hear about this Og. Would love to help but not sure what I can do from Singapore! Nevertheless, I’m sure something will crop up soon. Lookit all those offers to help in the comments!
Aw. To be so loved. :)
That sucks, man.
You have my best wishes and prayers that this will be a short vacation, and nothing more.
Wow man. Put’s my problems in perspective. So how’s that ten page resume gonna look?
This could be a good deal Og.
It is entirely possible that the next job will be better.
I haven’t had to have a resume in a very long time, Ed. I’ve been lucky that when i was available people were already looking for me.
And Jim, yeah, you never know, do you? things change fast in our world.
Send me your resume. Are you willing to relocate?
Do you have or can you qualify for a security clearance? I know of a guy over on the .mil side of the Stennis Space Center (located in southern Mississippi) who’s looking for a good professional geek.
Saw this on Kim Du Toit’s blog and my sympathies certainly go out to you. I got laid off while evac’d for Katrina, talk about a multiple whammy, but it turned out to be one of the best things that’s happened to me. New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, including the Stennis Space Center are in a virtual gold rush for skilled personnel. Don’t know what you do, but I’m sure we’d be glad to have you in NOLA or on the Miss Gulf Coast. Despite the troubles of 05 and MSM nay-saying, this is a wonderful area to live and work in. Most people take it in that order, too, unlike most of the U.S. If you can get out of work a little early during daylight savings time, you can get to any number of hot fishing holes within 20 min. of downtown NOLA or Stennis, and catch plenty of speckled trout, redfish, flounder and other misc. delicacies (put out a crab trap while you’re fishing and you’ve got the makings of a stuffed fish or Pontchartrain dish), before sundown. During hunting season, there’s a superabundance of whitetail, turkey, and you can do bayou varmint shooting for nutria just about any time. You’ll probably home school or send your kids to parochial or other private schools and you’ll want to get your CCW license in LA or MS, but especially in NOLA. Most neigborhoods are very safe–safer now than ever, despite the grisly news reports. Feel free to email me for more info, if you’re coming this way. God’s blessings to you!
