For the love of G-d
Is there ANYONE out there who can update this damned thing? The instructions from WordPress are worse than useless, and I neither have nor want the skills required to do it, as I expected. I just want to upgrade from wordpress 2.04 to whatever the damned thing is now.

I’m running WP 4.1 – the automatic update button has worked every time for me – so far.
Could be that a database upgrade is needed to go from 2.XX to 4.
PHP and MySQL will need to be current versions.
To run WordPress your host just needs a couple of things:
PHP version 5.2.4 or greater
MySQL version 5.0 or greater
Looks like I’ll be under the hood for a while.
Incremental version updates are recommended: 2.04 to 2.2 to 2.5 to 2.7 to 2.9 to 3.1 to 3.3 to 3.5 to 3.7 to 3.9 to 4.1.
Greek. You willing to try, ill throw you the keys.
I’ll fix it for ya – hope I don’t break it.
you got it.
FWIW, in order for the thing to work, it appears your host needs to support a few things. My host — Dream Host — provides automatic slipstreaming-style updates for WordPress. It may be that your host is lacking in this critical support function. I’d advise looking at a different host. I have four sites currently running on WordPress 4.1 with nary a hiccup — at least in this area.

My server won’t take a newer version, or does it have to be done in steps?
You might like a Plugin called:
WP Clean Up.
Keeps things tidier & you can nuke spam without looking at it first!
You are godlike. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this, and if I had any readers to speak of, how much they probably appreciate not listening to me whine anymore.
Oh, I’ve come to enjoy the wine you serve. Makes me feel somewhat better about what I get dealt from time to time.
