First of all: I am of the decided opinion that Christ had no intention of beginning a new religion called ‘Christianity”. I think Jesus came to help the Jews be better Jews, and to welcome more to Judaism. That was, I think, how it went for a while, and then PEOPLE decided ‘hey, I could really use a pork chop sammich, let’s drop a lot of this “jew” stuff and just start celebrating Jesus. yeah, we can keep the holdays, but we’ll change them around and make them more Jesusy.”<\/p>\n
Then the group of people that became the Catholic church, mostly founded by people who had an intense dislike for dreidles and kugel, started tear-assing around europe and the middle east, converting everything they could, and raping or killing that which they couldn’t. This proved to be a fairly successful business, and there was a lot of money in it, which is why it was copied with GREAT success by Mahomet, and is still being done by followers of Islam today. <\/p>\n
Eventually the Church calmed down and got to the business of being a legitimate religion, and everyone and their brother got involved to see how much scratch they could make. Robber barons had nothing on the PEOPLE of the early Church for tenacity and greed. but there were still a few trying to be decent Christians, to the best of their ability, and Church scholars worked very hard to try to make sense of the teachings of Christ. <\/p>\n
Some other PEOPLE, not liking what the church was doing, and totally ignoring the good work that WAS being done, decided to rewrite the rules in their own image, and make up bullshit about the church so they could get the dimwitted to follow them instead of the Pope. A lot of these PEOPLE made a lot of shit up like “Catholics worship MARY! they worship STATUES! they pray to SAINTS! all of which, of course, is asinine and patently bullshit, but they managed to find a bunch of other PEOPLE who would buy their shit by convincing them that they didn’t have to follow all those pesky Catholic rules to get into heaven, the ten commandments meant almost nothing, that John 3:16 was all they needed to know, their ticket to ride the big plane into Jesus’ arms. <\/p>\n
While this shit was happening, PEOPLE started looking at this new dorkchop named Mahomet and saying, ‘hey, he’s got some valid points” or maybe it was just their proclifity towards humping goats and small boys, but anyway, Mahomet managed to drag together a following of PEOPLE who joined (under pain of death) a religion in which the men are absolute rulers of everything, women are property, and everyone else is a rube to be conned, stolen from, and eventually murdered. This is a kind of an inverse ponzi scheme, which begins with “convert or kill” wherein only bombing the infidel gains you entrance into the hereafter as a hero, so ultimately, if everyone is converted, nobody can get their 72 virgins. Amazing nobobdy has figured this shit out, innit? <\/p>\n
Anyway, at some point PEOPLE started making noises about how government should beless like the opressive monarchies of the time and more like Christianity, neglecting, of course, the fact that Christianity was kind of a disaster a lot of the time. Those PEOPLE took these ideas to other PEOPLE, and those other people did things like, oh, the Communist Revolution. <\/p>\n
Some guys managed to break apart from these other PEOPLE and start a system of government that would self regulate. And for a while, it worked. And then PEOPLE started to try to make the government-that-worked a lot more like the governments that didn’t work, and PEOPLE realized that the power of the government allowed them to get things they wanted and they started to build monarchies like the ones other PEOPLE wanted to replace, while other PEOPLE wanted to take away all power from the individual by putting it in the hands of other PEOPLE, who ostensibly knew better. <\/p>\n
Beginning to see a common thread? <\/p>\n
PEOPLE suck. <\/p>\n
The only chance PEOPLE have is if the smarter ones have a chance to prevent the dumber ones from doing anything too horrible, and that is the basis of the system of checks and balances we have here- it prevents too fast a swing one way or another, and allows a lot of freedom. <\/p>\n
It’s a flawed and difficult system fraught with corruption and greed and downright evil people, as well as a solid majority of the downright brain dead. but it IS the best possible system anyone has come up with so far. The current system is bloated and fat, but by this time, every other imagineable system would have either collapsed under it’s own weight or been destroyed from within.<\/p>\n
There are a lot of nice things about a lot of the Ism’s. Communism, Socialism, Anarchism, yadda yadda, yadda. They all sound nice, but they are impossible to actually practice, because they require that PEOPLE be on their best behavior. And people aren’t. Oh, maybe one or two are, once in a while, but you’re hard pressed to find twenty decent people in a state, most days. So you need a tool like the Representative republic to allow the people to do the right thing when needed, and weed out the stupid. <\/p>\n
This mostly works. Mostly. The predominant impediment to our republic working ideally these days, are the members of the fourth estate, and moneyed morons who feel that they know better than us what is best for us. On a truly level playing field (Amazing that Democrats, the party of “levelling the playing field” slope it so steeply toward themself, innit?) no democrat could get elected as a dogcatcher, because if PEOPLE had anything like any idea of the truth, nobody would buy their shit. <\/p>\n
No. the system we have is not perfect- but i have HUGE faith in it, and it is hard for me to take anyone seriously who espouses any other. Like the PEOPLE who split from the original forms of Christianity, all those other isms do is fragment and therefore dilute the core idea: Freedom is what we want. We value freedom most of all. Like Christians value Christ, Americans love Freedom. If you don’t like the way things are, taking your ball and going home is the worst way to make a change. The forces of evil are gathering against Christianity, just as they are gathering against our Republic. We nourish them with our inability to come together. <\/p>\n
This is why when someone says ‘I’m an anarchist” I think either “idiot” which most of them are, or “” well, I can’t imagine what to think, otherwise. And when someone I know and respect a great deal claims to be an anarchist, it makes me wonder what the hell they’re thinking. <\/p>\n
because nobody has ever been able to give me any useful principle of anarchy that isn’t a core of the values our founders posessed and tried to insure, and PEOPLE have fucked with. So my answer to Anarchists is “you’rew a fucking moron” in most cases, and in the case of people like Roberta, who is definitively NOT a moron, I have to say, what on earth can a philosophy that is utterly doomed to certain failure give you that our existing republic, flawed though it is, cannot give you, if managed the way it should be?
