That little thing sticking out of the left of your steering column?
It’s called a “turn signal” Actually, it’s a “turn signal switch”. The actual turn signals are on the outside of the vehicle, where other people can see them. The “turn signal switch” controls these signals, and it allows other people to know when you are about to turn, or change lanes, for instance- it’s almost as if THEY CAN READ YOUR MIND! You must co-operate, though, for this to happen. Now here are some instructions for you, lest you become confused.
If you are turning left, push the little lever down. It will click into position and a little light on your dashboard will begin to flash. DON’T PANIC! this is just a little light to show you the whole system is working. And when you have made your turn, the switch will TURN ITSELF OFF AGAIN AUTOMATICALLY!!! It’s as if it were MAGIC!
Now. The hard part. If you are turning right, push the little lever UP.
Now, remember- Left, down. Right, up.
Please print this out and put it on every car you see. Don’t worry about offending anyone. the three people who know this, in north America, are also in on it.

Oh man!! I see so many people on the road that need to read this.
How hilarious!
I try to pass people like this and happily extend my middle finger to them.
Ok, Ok, I do use my manners and beep at them a few times too…as I pass!
Simple solution.
People will happily use their turn signals when, by law, the switch simultaneously sets the laser triggered egg “dispenser.”
I almost T-boned a cop who couldn’t figure that out.
We pulled up to opposing stop signs signs at a 4 way intersection at the same time. I was heading straight through and so was he.
Whoa!
Or not.
There’s a bumper sticker I’ve seen that reads, ” Forget world peace, visualize using your @#$%&* turn signal!”
In Seattle, turn signals are considered to be an invasion of privacy.
In Florida we leave them on all of the time. Usually going down I-75 in the left lane at 45MPH with the right blinker on continuously.
This is probably one of my biggest pet peaves on the road. I often consider running these people off the road.
My father is terrible about not using his. Too many trip around town driving the curbside recycling trucks with the flashers going. Whenever I am riding with him and he doesn’t use it, he is assured of hearing my thunderous voice holler “TURN SIGNAL!!!!!!!!!!!” Usually only have to do it 2 or 3 times per trip.
It is such a huge deal to me, that usually 3 times a week I will be in my DRIVEWAY, which has a curve down towards the garage, and will hit my signal.
If you can get the bastards to use the signal, next I really want you to work on the “Look out the window IN THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO TURN, preferably BEFORE you yank the wheel over.”
Get out of my head, og…
Wait, a minute…are you saying that little “turn signal” thingabob actually turns the car, too? This is so confusing. Fortunately I have my cell phone here so I can call and ask friends for advice while I drive.
I keep a gun in the car just in case I run into you, Zonk.
I saw a great bumper sticker years back the said (the top line in a much larger font than the bottom line):
HWJD
How Would Jesus Drive?
I’d like to get one of these and then another to go next to it that says something along the lines of
For starters-
He’d use His turn signals!
Maybe I could guilt some of the Christians into using theirs.
And the thing of it is, using the turn signal requires very little thought it should be second nature.
Another one of my pet peeves is not turning the headlights on in a parking garage, particularly a crowded one. Happens all the time at work. It’s all I can do not to bark at my fellow employees. I’m working on trying not to get so ruffled. Not a good way to start my mornings. I HAVE suggested to our bldg maint/security patrols that they simply have a sign (like the ones in tunnels to remind you to turn OFF your lights upon exiting) such as “Lights On for Safety, please” or something like that, but they don’t seem very interested.
