Hugh jackass
An email I just sent to the Hugh Hewitt show:
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I just got home from work, and was listening to the Hugh show on WIND in Chicago.
A caller remarked ‘When seconds count, police are minutes away” Hugh made the comment, agreeing with an Aryan Nation ex-con that this was ‘Crazy talk” and that it “Denigrates cops”
This is first-water ignorance. First of all, the statement is provably, demonstrably, irrefutably true. Second, any cop who is “denigrated” by the statement has no place on a police force anywhere in America. A good cop will quote the statement to you. A great cop will tell you how to secure your home and give yourself the couple of minutes it takes the cop to get there, a superior cop will take you to the range and show you how to exercise your second amendment rights to make sure that you are safe until the police arrive.
I am greatly disappointed in this, though not surprised. I’d like to hope Hugh would come to his senses on this issue, but I will not be surprised if he does not. Nor will I be listening to the show any more to find out.
Dumbasses. Some never get it.

I agree completely.
I’m impressed by your restraint. I go full-on frothy when I hear/see stuff like that (home security system ads, anyone?).
Yep, Hewitt is what passes for a conservative in Orange County. Can’t abide him any more. And big john howell in WIND frosts my stindeens as well.
Apparently Hugh never listened to this:

It took over ten minutes for the cops to get there. By that time a guy had broken into the house and the woman had to shoot him to defend herself from a man who threw a chair through a glass door to gain entry.
Joanna, I get frothy too, but I have to temper it, because unless you show restraint and courtesy they dismiss you out of hand. Politeness and disdain can be welded together into a scathing email and frothing need not be apparent. Vonnegut once said something about books being laced wiht obscenity being dismissed out of hand, and he’s right. Always be nice, as Dalton said: I want you to be nice until it’s time to not be nice.
Hugh “Radio RNC” Hewitt is a tool of the first water. To support this assertion, let Facts be submitted to a candid world ;-):
* He has said over and over that “intermediate scrutiny” is the best gunowners can or should hope for
* Opposing Harriet Miers “wasn’t worth the candle” for the damage it would do to the Bush administration
* Lied serially about being in the tank for Slick Mitt Romney
* During the first mortgage crisis had his Mortgage Minute guy plugging cash-out refis as if using your home as an ATM wasn’t part of the problem and reducing equity was part of the solution
* Said, as the same crisis broke, that we were gonna have to print our way out of this one, and those (referring to Fed and Treasury — of course, this was before the election, when they were “our,” for given values of our, SOBs) are smart guys, they’ll know when to pull it back out so we don’t get hyperinflation
In short, a whited sepulchre.
I hate it when I hear this stuff from people who should (but obviously don’t) know better. This is really simple.
I work in a small city in california. Our average response time is 2 to 3 minutes. That’s really pretty good but I can tell you from experience that when your life is on the line even 2 or 3 minutes is a very, very long time. It gets pretty damn lonely pretty damn fast. I’ll get there as fast as I safely can but brother, if you’re betting on me getting there before something bad happens you’re taking a mighty big gamble. One I won’t personally make.
Get a gun and learn how to use it. Take a shooting class(s) and learn to think tactically.
I’m entirely too big to fit in your pocket. FWIW.
Six, you prove my point to a tee. Thank you!!
hehe… You’re too funny, Six.
Nice to hear from one of our Good-Guys here of Og’s Blog.
In this era of little respect for the police, you really have thankless job. Just like to say that I am glad you guys are there: You are a major dampening of transient behaviors just by being there doing your job. Every day.
Thank you.
In fairness to Hewitt, his enthusiasm for that caller chilled P.D.Q. when the caller announced he was a former AN convict. There was a moment of dead silence, and HH was probably glaring daggers at his call screener for letting two whackos in a row on the air.
HH is pretty annoying, but in this market it’s either him or Michael Savage on the drive home, so it’s the lesser of two evils on the radio…
Savage does drive me nuts. His accent is like nails on a chalkboard. I’d rather listen to nails on a chalkboard.
