I do not read science fiction
The way I used to, anyway. I was hardcore until about twenty years ago, and then my interest just dropped off. I have since then been far more interested in murder mystery and alternate histories, and frankly the SF stuff that was out there… well it wasn’t changing very much. No matter what I read, it seemed I had read it somewhere before, and the before read was better, having been done by one of the old masters.
I was also annoyed by the sheer leftism of a large segment of the genre. While I grew up loving Vonnegut, I later learned to despise his pacifism even in the midst of the things he’d been through. If you saw the horrors of Nazi Germany with your own eyes, and you still think there’s no good reason to fight, you’re the kind of idiot that epic poems are written about.
So it was with some surprise that I read this piece by Larry Correia.
A man who can rant like that deserves my attention. I will be ordering books next payday.

Well, Larry doesn’t actually write Science Fiction… He writes adventure fantasy… But it’s still great stuff.
Of course, I’m a character in one of his books, so I’m a bit biased.
I’ve read everything he’s written so far, and he’s great. In fact I’m making my second pass thru Monster Hunters now. IIRC you have a Kindle, you can get Kindle versions of his books from Baen for something like $6 or $7 each.
I may well do that
Ever read the Brother Cadfael mysteries by the late Ellis Peters, Og? And how are the Travis McGee books going? Give up on them?
Travis really pissed me off
I think you will enjoy them thoroughly.
OG:
Tom Kratman
David Weber
John Ringo
David Drake
All Sci Fi writers who acknowledge that sometimes, you gotta kill the barbarians before they can finish their baby barbeque.
Og…
Welcome to the fold. It’s about time! And I echo Geo’s recommendations. David Weber’s Honor Harrington series is, imho, excellent. Add John Scalzi to the list, as well. His Old Man’s War series is very good.
Larry’s books are available on Audible.com if you do audiobooks. The stories are great and the narrators are perfect. Bronson Pinchot does Larry’s Grimnoir Chronicle series perfectly, much to my great surprise and delight. And John Ringo is tops in the list above IMHO. His never-ending Legacy of the Aldenata series is top military sci-fi.
May I suggest H. Beam Piper’s Novels. He’s been dead since ’64, but He is still in my top 3.
I also love Pournelle’s Sparta Series, very prophetic as it turns out is his description of the welfare state.
Ditto on science fiction, I read a ton when younger, then lost my taste for it when it got tired and swung left. Also, Correia’s first Monster Hunter book will grab you at page one, I guarantee it!
H. Beam Piper books can be found here

You haven’t read Correia before?
Damn. It’s like I don’t know you…
If you can find it, try Drake’s The General series, if you haven’t seen it. You’ll see some resemblances to today.
I think Sarah Hoyt is going to get some of my shekels as well.
Thanks for linking to that rant.
Enjoyable.
