It may be
that there are other, safer, even better ways to split wood.
Maybe this is better.
No, that just doesn’t have bad idea written all over it, its in italics. Maybe this?
It at least seems to wreak it’s havoc slowly. Here’s one that just is wrong, stupid redneck, and wads of fun
Then there’s this, which I think could cause you to die of exposure while you were splitting wood for heat.
Now, THIS is what I’m talking about.
Of course expense is the thing, I could heat my house for most of the rest of my life on what that sucker costs, but how cool! Though I don’t klnow if I like the idea of being that close to a blade that big spinning that fast with only a thin piece of lexan between me and it.

How about slow and easy?
I have split so many cords of wood the old fashioned way so that Dad would have wood I was actually QUITE happy when he told me this year he wasn’t up to keeping the fireplace going at his age. There’s just enough for a power failure of a week or so and that is it.
Old fashioned way works for a reason… sigh
Yeah, my splitter may be somewhat redneck, and it isn’t as fast, and only has an anemic half dead engine, but it does wood fairly quickly for me and is a LOT safer.
But you know that….
I swear, while I was watching the Cord King video, I could hear the sniveling and wailing of tree-huggers as part of the soundtrack.
We heated with wood for quite a few years, this is the splitter I ended up with: http://www.oldengine.org/members/jdunmyer/sawmill/mar27_29.jpg It’s powered with this: http://www.oldengine.org/members/jdunmyer/sawmill/mar27_30.jpg (there’s a 15Hp electric motor inside the drum.)
However, I had one of those Stickler screw-type splitters, similar to the #4 video, only mine was mounted onto the back of a John Deere Model ‘B’ tractor, driven by the PTO. It worked great, and I never felt it was dangerous. A rope, attached to the hand clutch was the E-Stop. However, it was a back-breaker because it was so low to the ground. Four people couldn’t keep up with it.
Used wedges and mauls, though hydraulic press splitters were pretty slick. Some of the ones in the videos seem to be pretty dangerous to me. Amazing what lengths some people will go to get something done.
