So I hate to spend cash on computers

Most of the stuff I do with them, I can do with an old beater, and my office regularly trashes them.

So my current home tower is an old Dell Precision 670 workstation.

it was, however, set up to accept a LOT of memory and a LOT of processor, so via Ebay i put in two processors each of which was 50% faster than the original single processor, 8 gig of memory, and upgraded to Win7. It took some fiddling to get it right, but it seems to be working just fine.

Couple weeks back, while making room in the office for some new equipment, I stumbled on a copy of Doom3. I remember buying it when it came out- but at the time I didn’t have enough computer to run it.

I do now. Sheesh, what a change from the old Castle Wolfenstein days. I know this is nothing compared to the FPS games today, but I remember wasting a lot of time playing it. It will be interesting to see if it is as addicting as it was back then.

No, I can’t actually play the damnedthing, I don’t have reflexes like that. I play in God mode and just wander around and shoot stuff.

I have been rereading several of the Discworld books.

They do quickly become old friends.

It dawns on me that as I read them I see specific characters- they were dim at first, but they fleshed themselves out eventually. For instance- for me, Havelock Ventnari can only be Jeremy Irons. Mustrum Ridcully can only be Theodore Roosevelt. When I read Rincewind I invariably picture a very young Gene Wilder. (No, don’t think Willy Wonka, think Leo Bloom) Eddie Deezen can only be Ponder Stibbons. Nobby Nobbs is Gilbert Gottfried. Lady Sybyl can only be Penelope Keith. And Sam Vimes is Jack Lord.

These are the faces I see when I read the book. Whose faces do you see?

one to go

I’ve had a sensitive spot on my lower back for about a month, and last night after returning from work I stood in the shower and scratched it. It popped open and bled, and I squeezed and out popped a piece of #8 birdshot. I managed to catch it before it went down the drain.

I think the only one I have left is the one in the back of my head- I can feel it in there, but it doesn’t cause me any pain and I’ve never had any reason to remove it.

If that one ever works it’s way to the surface I will only have the titanium appliances from various surgeries, and some synthetic plastics. It would be nice to be planted lead free, when that time comes, and I like to think my produce thieving days are behind me.
