Postal match
This is an official NRA 50 foot smallbore rifle target.

Go out and buy some, or order some from these guys, and take out your best 22 rifle and practice. For the record, it is an A-36.
The NRA conducts “Postal matches”. They have nothing to do with going postal. They involve shooting at your local range, and mailing targets to a specific location for scoring.
The NRA requires registration etc, but here, i will rely on trust.
Get some targets and practice. The rules are simple: iron sights, sporter rifle only, 22 long rifle. Fifty feet. Forty shots, 10 shots per target, one shot fired at each bull on the a-36 target. Four practice shots will be allowed, two at each of the center two bulls. Offhand only, standing, sling allowed but no rests.
Entries must be emailed to me, mhardig-at-aol-dot-com by August 1. When you email me I will give you a snail mail address to mail your targets, which must arrive by August 15. Scoring will be by me. Anyone can enter. People in the Chicago area who wish to enter may meet me at the range, and I will supply a rifle and ammunition with pleasure. Others may contact local bloggers in their area for help if required.
I don’t want the best target you can come up with in the course of several weeks, I want you to practice until you’re happy, then take a day, shoot forty shots in under one hour, and send those four targets to me. ONLY actual NRA a-36 targets will be accepted. You can practice on anything, but you MUST submit four A-36 targets.
Results will be posted here, I will use whatever means you prefer to identify you. Scoring will be by me. I am the ultimate authority, but in the event of a disagreement on scoring (if you think your score should be higher than I say it is) the targets will be mailed to Kim Du Toit for confirmation of score, if he is amenable to that.

So, that’s what happened to my Oreo’s.

Oreos which come to my house are merely eaten.
rachel posted one last time.
Are you militia-recruiting, Og? :)
I’m just trying to have a little match here, Seiki. ;)
You gonna shoot? C’mon, it’ll be fun!
Mark, forgive me — blame it on the Benadryl — but there are 10 (non-practice) targets on the A-36. Are you SURE you meant 10 rounds per target, or did you mean 4 rounds into each of the 10 targets?
Oh, and I assume you need a 3rd-party signature on the target?
Reason I asked is that 10 rounds makes a bug damn hole after the first five — and it’s easy to cheat. Four rounds shows quite clearly.
Kim, if I remember from my competition days it’s one shot per bulleye, ten bulls per target and four targets for a total of forty shots.
Peter has it right. One shot per bullseye. Ten shots per paper target. Four in the center practice area. (if you desire)
Four paper targets is forty shots.
Sounds like fun. I’ll have to see if I can find the targets here and break-out the old AR-7. She has had an uncountable # of rounds put through her and usually gets used for killin pop can & such so it’ll be interesting to see how accurate she still is when trying to hit the bull.
Mailing It In
A Hollywoodweird term for delivering a careless, lazy performance. Well, a careless, lazy performance won’t win you any awards here, but you won’t win unless you Mail It In to the Neanderpundit. The NRA conducts “Postal matches”. They have nothing
Great idea, Og! I’m in. Plus, I’ve linked you over at my site… hope it gets you a few more entries, anyway.
You’ve already got my e-mailed entry man. Now all I’ve gotta do is go shoot for score (aka embarass myself) and send my target back to you!
This is gonna be fun. *grin*

Hey, I’ll probably embarrass myself as well- but at least, I’ll finally know if Kim or I is a better shot. I suspect it’s Kim, he spends a lot more time at the range than I get to.
I’m in.
As I posted at Kim’s place, if anyone in the Northern Virginia area wants to get together to shoot the match at the terrific NRA range, let me know. I’ll provide the .22 (in the form of a 10/22 – I left the Remington Targetmaser in Georgia) and ammo.
Count me in…
Would have liked to use my H&R 52, but you said “sporting rifle” so it’s the 10-22…
Cajun, if this goes off I plan to have other competitions- for now, I think everyone has some kind of sporting rifle in 22 caliber, and that’s where I chose to start.
By the way, folks, please don’t forget to mail me. I’d like to know ahead of time how many targets I’m going to have to check.
Also, if anyone would like to donate prizes, that would be nice.
Og,
Got here by way of Kim du Toit.
Count me in for the postal match. Haven’t done any offhand rifle shooting at paper in years, but I’ve got a couple nice pre-WWII Winchester .22s I’ve never had occasion to fire.
This will give me an excuse.
By the way, I’m in Chicago too (don’t ask!); if you ever want to go shooting, give me a shout.
Best,
Bob K
This sounds like fun… my first rifle competition since Boy Scout summer camp. Count me in; my blog partner Captain Morpholine wants to compete too, but he’s on vacation with no computer access for a week; will that be too late to sign up?
Never mind, I just read the whole post. We’ll have our official entries in by the 1st.
Postal Match
I heard about this through Jim.It would appear that the neanderpundit is putting together a postal match where you go and shoot your best forty rounds , and then mail them in by august 15. Sounds like an interesting idea.Jim is suggesting that those
Folks, I have to say, at the range this morning I took a crack at that A-36, and it’s NOT easy. At 50 feet those targets look like dots. If you consider not entering because you feel embarrassed about your score, don’t. I can almost guarantee that I will have the lowest score on the list.
No, i’m not having second thoughts, a contest should be hard to make winning worthwhile-and this is not going to be easy. I’m going to need a lot of practice before I shoot.
Weekly Check on the Bias…
Is it July 19th already? Gosh, the Summer is almost half-over! Well, in Vermont, anyway. So here’s the latest Weekly Check on the Media’s Bias Against Guns… I examine some of the stories reported by the press regarding guns and…
I’ve just emailed pistoleer to find out how long it’ll take to get targets over here, but I’m not holding my breath… Let’s hope this becomes an annual event!

Hey, I’m just a .22 long handgun kinda broad. Can I still play? Same rules, same setup, but with my itty bitty ruger? Please, pretty please?

Range Report
So I finally got to go to the range yesterday. Standard report to follow. A 10 shot group from the Bushmaster @ 100yds. Actually, 3 small groups and a flyer (click for bigger) And I don’t know if you’ve heard about this already, but Og at Neanderpundit…
What a nice day.
Talk about a nice day. Went to Mooresville, IN and had a wonderful dinner at Gray’s Brothers Cafeteria, a place that Steve H would love. Chicken fried the way it was intended by nature: in lard. Amazing home made pies….
