On the road again
Well the Exploder isn’t, but it is on it’s way- the disassembly has finished and the reassembly has begun. THe timing chain cover is back on, and the old water pump is bolted up to allow me to put tension to the timing cover gasket. It’ll be nice to be able to let it dry thoroughly overnight, too. Tomorrow, the last of the hoses come in and I can get it back together. Maybe even drive tomorrow night.
Me, on the other hand, I’m putting in hours trying to get some long overdue jobs up to speed, and it feels good to hit the road early and travel three, four hundred miles in a day, getting things fixed, making a difference. Like being back in the saddle. Feels good. I’m content.
Yes, Jefro, I did sacrtifice blood to the gods of the Wrench. Early on, in fact. And I will probably do more manana.

What I hate about waterpumps is you have to totally reassemble the vehicle to see if you got the gasket and sealant right.
I can’t count how many times I had to rip the whole thing apart again when it started spewing.
I always hear Indigo Montoya when I start wrenching ” There will be blood tonight!”
Heh. The most likely place I donate is on my forearms where I try to reach something that a five year old with abnormally long arms would curse trying to get to.
I end up with radiator scuffs anytime I work on a water pump – those thin, parallel cuts.
I know that the Explorer has a bad reputation in some circles, but I have to admit that my ’92 with 240k miles on it has been one of the most dependable vehicles I’ve ever owned.
It simply, works.
I’ve been itching to get a pickup (hard to just throw a yard of mulch or half a cord of firewood in the back of the Explorer) but it’s very hard to part with a vehicle that has been so dependable.
