Centerfire rifles
Our state is considering the use of centerfire rifles for hunting in deer season. There has been no centerfire season here for many years.
The rifles would be limited to pistol cartridges, though just which ones I don’t know yet. I know currently that 357 mag, 45 colt, and some other, similar cartridges are currently legal in handguns. Wait, here’s the description:
The proposed deer firearm season rule change language reads:
– The rifle cartridge must:
(A) have a bullet of three hundred fifty-seven thousandths of an inch (.357) diameter or larger;
(B) have a minimum case length of one and sixteen hundredths (1.16) inches; and
(C) have a maximum case length of one and six hundred twenty-five thousandths (1.625) inches.
So we’re looking at large bore cartridges that have a fairly short range, not sniper rounds by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it’s probably a good thing, all things considered. I’ve been hoping for a centerfire cartridge rule, i have.
Anyway, in a sporting goods store at lunchtime today, I overhear this conversation. ” They’re gonna allow centerfire rifle cartridges”. “jees, if you miss where you’re shooting, think where that bullet’s gonna go”.
Fucktards.
YOU ARE THE REASON WE HAVE THESE STUPID LAWS TO BEGIN WITH. THE FACT THAT YOU WOULD EVEN CONSIDER NOT KNOWING WHERE YOUR SHOT WILL GO MEANS YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND RIFLE SAFETY.
Jesus Christ in a Chrysler, folks, if you intend to shoot at something and you don’t know what’s behind it, and you aren’t perfectly prpared to shoot what’s behind it TOO, do NOT PULL THE TRIGGER.
Hunting from a tree stand will always put your round in the ground, if it clears the deer. Hunting from the ground, all you have to do is be sure the damned deer isn’t standing on a rise, but DON’T PULL THE DAMNED TRIGGER IF YOU AREN’T SURE OF YOUR SHOT AND WHAT IS BEHIND IT. Man, I had to leave that store before I strangled both of the asses.

What do you expect from people. These are the same ones that probably freak out over the fact that a semi-auto .22lr I have has a scope and holds more then 10 rounds. I’m obviously going to be sniping people with it.
The asinine part was, these were HUNTERS.
hmmm, 1.625″ huh… I believe that puts the .460xvr right up the top of that list… if someone would jsut make a levergun to chamber it.
Then I could have it run .460, or .454, or .45 colt, and have my sidearm run the same ammo YAY!
Morons are morons, such is life when you live in illinois, indiana, ohio, pennsylvania etc… In my experiences theres a hell of a lot of zumbos out there.
Fucking retards…
Not them, us.
How in the fuck do we allow people this fucking stupid to govern us?
Tell me, Dick. Makes me ashamed not to have taken out a few more.
Chris, I live in Zumbo Central. But I turn one every now and then. The SKS is a wonderful mechanism to get a shotgunner to like rifles.
Had a similar conversation with a buddy in Iowa who didn’t think it was a good idea to use a rifle since the state was so flat it would take out kids 5 miles away in a school or something.
Idiot.
Anyway, can you handgun hunt?? You’r in Indiana, aren’t you???
Fucking morons.
I got into a pretty heated argument about centerfire rifle hunting at a gun store a few months back. Basically I was saying that they shouldn’t do a statewide ban in Illinois when there are large swaths of land down in southern Illinois that are unpopulated enough that it would be less dangerous than firing in the woodlots bordering suburbia. I said it should be decided on a county to county basis.
The fucktard basically said the same thing about “what if there’s a miss….”
Goddamn idiots.
On a side note, Contagion is still waiting for a cement-filled beer can season…
When the unemployed brother of our neighbor was whiling away the time shooting at a line of cans standing on a fence, my father stepped over and had a few words, pointing out that there was a highway across the empty field beyond the fence. I was a kid then and was impressed to hear that rifle bullets could travel that far.
Dumbasses.
Hmpffff.
I like the idea of a rifle/pistol combo firing the same ammo but for hunting I would stick to the black powder.
NOTHING is better than taking game with a traditional rifle and a patched round ball.
Except maybe taking game with a pistol…is that an option Og? Is handgun hunting legal there? I would love to try that.
They may have been hunters, but they’re the kinds of hunters you see reports about on television with HUNTING TRAGEDY over the news reader’s shoulder.
Strangling them could have been considered a public service…
There are lever guns available in .480 Ruger, which is usually 1.630 to 1.640. The Cast Performance 425 gr. bullet over an appropriate powder load would be probably more than you would need, probably a 335 or a 370 would be perfect…..
……. Mr. C.
Yup, no problem whatsoever using large caliber, centerfire cartridges for hunting in flat country that’s densely populated with lots of other hunters around. Just shoot towards the ground or make sure there’s something good and solid behind your target. I’ll stake my good name on that practice.
Thompson/Center makes a 20″ Katahdin barrel for the Encore in .460 S&W and .500 S&W both cartridge cases are 1.600″ – 1.625″ or could be trimmed to such. Hornady’s 300 gr Evolution Load in .500 S&W is muzzle 2075fps/2868ft-lbs, 100yds 1706fps/1939ft-lbs. This is Hornady’s info from a 10″ revolver. A 20″ carbine barrel should be a little stiffer. Additionally Hornady offers a 350gr XTP-Hp and 500gr XTP-FN.
The .460 S&W Barrel gets you the use of .45 LC, .454 Casull and .460 S&W all in the same tube.
[…] Jesus, you walk away from your computer for five minutes… Some asstard calling himself Rick O Shea mouthed off in comments to the ‘centerfire rifles” post below. […]
Good luck to you fellows; keep kicking the doors down. Get the big pistol cartridges approved, run the bullet out until it touches the grooves, and fill the case with powder.
As I live in Wyoming, I cannot fathom not having the killing power of our ’06s and 300s. We like to kill the animal in his/her tracks. The real hunters here always make sure of their target, at whatever distance we feel comfortable with, whether it is a bull elk at 50 yards or a big mulie at 400 (lots and lots of practice, a good range finder, and a rest and a military sling).
As I said before, good luck, stick together, and get big pistol cartridges approved.
