Friday afternoon
I participated in, and led much if not most of the discussion in, a meeting. A fairly high level one, too- that was aimed at improving communication between varying types of machinery. Robots and machine tools being the primary focus.
I was in this meeting because ten years ago I wrote a standard for the very same thing for a small machine tool builder, a standard that has now been in common use all this time.
Now I’m being asked to help develop this as a standard across the industry, because my original standard was so effective and functional.
of course, you know these are all lies. Nobody without a PhD could possibly be doing anything of merit.

That’s old school. Or should be.
My parents were shocked in the early 80s when I declared to be basically a “college dropout”.
I know at least one VP at my company who is only a high school grad. and she has been there for at least twenty years, as have I. She’s highly competent and well-respected.
Nowadays especially, I think that college corrupts the mind rather than enhances it.

THIS is why I love comin’ over here. I had to have this same flippin’ type of discussion this past week. I have a friend who thinks I’m doin’ nothing but hurt myself because I don’t have a degree. I don’t need it anymore. I’ve already crawled my way up the corp. ladder and broken through the glass ceiling – a degree would do nothing for me but eat up money and time.
Life would have been easier if I had, but I couldn’t so I didn’t. But not having that paper does not have mean I do not have the skill or intelligence to be successful…..

The job requirements for most of the positions in my company state a degree and x amount of experience or x+Y many years of experience. I think degree’s help out early on, but once you’ve been in the field for so long the experience makes up for it.
These days, the majority of employers use a degree as a screening criterion — but not for intelligence or learning. They use it to satisfy themselves that the applicant can persevere and finish something that takes an extended period of time and effort.
What our high schools demand of their students doesn’t give any evidence either for or against that proposition. Food for thought.
I have no issue with the value of an education. I take issue with people telling me I’m stupid because I have none.
