I don’t know anyone I like
That doesn’t feel the passing of a beloved pet like a knife to the gut.
I was having this conversation the other day, with one of my oldest and dearest friends. He stated: “When I reach the pearly gates, I have a question for the Big guy. Why did he have to make dog’s lives so short?”
I told him, hey, Gary, I can tell you that. it’s to make their life precious to us.
Most Christians hold that animals have no soul. You know what I think? Fuck any supreme being that wants me and not my dogs.
Godspeed, Jake.

Last year was my bad year… 3 cats and my old dog.
Rest in Peace, Jake.
“Fuck any supreme being that wants me and not my dogs.”
My thoughts exactly.
Og, do you remember the episode of the “Twilight Zone” with the old man and his dog who had gone raccon hunting? It’s called “The Hunt”.
The first place he comes across claims to be Heaven, but won’t let his dog in. He tells them he won’t go anywhere without his dog, not even heaven.
The next place the old man comes to has a man out front relieved to see him and his dog, stating that the people who run the other place have gotten many people to enter with the false claim of being Heaven. The Old man asks if his dog can come in too, and the man out front replies with something to the effect of “It couldn’t be Heaven without dogs.”
I always figured that episode got it right. That one and the episode where the traveling salesman stalls Death to save a little girl are my favorites.
I remember a catholic priest, on being asked in an RCIA class whether dogs go to heaven, said, ‘if they are necessary here on earth for your happiness, they will be there in heaven for your happiness as well’.
Of course I have extended that theological proposition to include beer!
We have a fabulous vet who brings his Christian values into his work. There is no doubt in my mind that there isn’t a better vet (or by extension, animal hospital) in the business. In fact, I believe we patronize not so much an animal hospital as a ministry to animals, and if it were to turn out that the good folks there don’t believe animals have souls, it would be a huge shock to me.
I fully expect to see not only my human associates in heaven, but my pets as well. How is it heaven without all those souls who surrounded you and were important in your life?
Although, apropos Hankster, I have to put in my vote for a good single malt Scotch. :)
Thanks, Og. This means a great deal to Mark, me and Jake.Sometimes I wonder how I manage to work for a vet.I’m lucky, I guess. They’re great vets and very special friends as well.

I may be wrong but there is something about a lion and a lamb? I also think the way Hankster does… I just cannot picture The Big Guy without about a hundred dogs laying at His feet and at least a bushel of cats on His lap, plus all the little kids too.
Heaven is a glorious place I believe, it will have it’s reverence but it will have plenty of humour too.
God bless Jake, Toni and swmbo
I have felt no greater loss than that of a belove dog
I wonder if we aren’t our pets’ intercessors. If we get to heaven, and this loyal and loving pet is part of what made up a savable soul, how could One disagree with the statement that since this creature’s love helped me to be better and get up here, what would be wrong with returning the favor and requesting a spot in Heaven for the pet? It is, after all, all supposed to be about love.
p.s.: I remember that Twilight episode, too. I also remember that the dog growled at the fake heaven gatekeeper, warning his master about him, while it was ok with the real one.
Sometimes we need to be reimined how precious those lives are. They ARE family.
Hardest thing I had to do was put our dog, Picasso, down last December. My son (2 1/2) lets us know about once a week he still misses him. So do I.
@ Rob: Maybe even two or THREE bushels of cats (:P Ogger).
sorry, Broad. I’m sure God loves kitties fine, but He made His name a palindrome for Dog. . Pretty clear what his preferece is.
Well, and did you here the one about the agnostic, dyslexic, insomniac? He lays awake all night wondering if there’s a dog.
I know my dog will be waiting for me when I get there. It’s been a little over 3 years and I still miss her. *sigh*
I’m so sorry to hear about Jake.
Og… yeah but He will need plenty of cats too… them rats will always try and sneak in! :-)
Like the others said, it couldn’t be heaven without dogs.
And yes, cats. But I’m sure they’re segregated from the general population… ;)
Hankster: Yep, and shooting ranges, too.
I really can’t believe that the dogs I’ve known (our family’s and others) did not have souls and various murderers did.
