Finally
Tiller running, dirt in danger
I put a carb kit in the tiller. Figured out by accident that it wasn’t running because the vent hole in the gas cap was clogged, the gas tank would prevent fuel flow to the carb. One 3/64 drill later, new filter, fresh oil, it runs like new.
This was my uncle Calvin’s Troy Bilt. He bought it in 1972. He used it (and a Gravely) to farm a 6 acre strawberry farm. A very nice place. I’m happy to have this, it reminds me of him, and i love my uncle Calvin like I love my Dad. I have Dad’s tractor, too. Anyway, with new filters etc, they’re sitting together in the shed now, yapping at one another.
If I can get my ass ready for the NOR shoot, I might just be able to get the motorcycle out in June.

In the Long Ago, before dirt formed I was at a Father-Son campout with my Dad. In the same campground was a family group who were running a portable generator so they could watch movies. It was so loud, we couldn’t hear a darn thing, so my Dad had me sneak over and plug the gas cap vent hole with a twig. He told me to cut it off flush and wipe dirt over it with my finger so they couldn’t see it in the dark. A few minutes after I got back the genset sputtered and quit.
A couple of the men at the movie show puttered with the engine, pulled the spark plug, opened the gas tank and looked in, made a few wise mechanical pronouncements and restarted the generator. A few minutes later, it sputtered and quit. We giggled while they went through the routine twice more before giving up.
I have used that procedure twice since to silence loud gensets in campgrounds. It works a lot better than getting into an argument with a jerk full of beer.
That’s great Og!
I’m working on getting a Troy-bilt tiller running also – this one was one my Granddaddy bought for Granny’s gardening, Dad used it for a number of years, then my Aunts, now me. It sat up for a while, and I haven’t gotten it running yet… The imminent arrival of a newborn here has put a lot of my other projects on hold, because this project timeline isn’t terribly flexible :)
Once that settles down a bit and we get a new routine working, I’ll be able to work other projects back in, and hopefully get a good garden going next spring.
Congrats on getting the tiller working! Did you find out anything from K&N? I may find myself in the same boat soon.
Motorcycle? What motorcycle? Are you secretly a scooter trash gunny?
Cheap bastard scooter trash gunny, Fodder.
