The Duke is 100 today
yeah, John Wayne- Marion Michael Morrison- would be 100 years old today.
The Duke was his own man. No rules applied to him other than the ones he made himself. My father’s name was Marion, and the two were much alike in a lit of ways- when I think of Dad, I think of John Wayne in “Quiet Man” and Gary Cooper in “Pride of the Yankees”. He combined a lot of the qualities of both roles.
In his own words:
“I would like to be remembered, well…the Mexicans have a phrase, ‘Feo, fuerte y formal’. Which means; he was ugly, strong and had dignity.” (Time Magazine interview, 1969)
God keep you, Duke. Thank you for the entertainment. Thanks for showing us what real men can be like, at their best. Happy birthday.

Happy Birthday Big Man!
… wow…. my Dad was named Marion too…. hell, I thought I was the only one…..
I’ll give ya one guess as to what my dad’s name is.
Yep, Marion.
I’m not a drinking man, as a rule, but I propose a toast to all Marions past and present
“The Quiet Man” is one of my favorite movies.
Best. Fistfight. Ever.
It didn’t even occur to me that that’s why PBS (feh!) was showing “Red River” last night.
A real man, indeed.
“The Quiet Man” is tops in my book as well. (followed by “McLintock” and “The High And The Mighty”.
I can remember watching “True Grit” with my dad back when I was a wee bairn.
I’ve wanted a gatling gun ever since….
There was no gatling gun in True Grit.
You’re probably thinking of The War Wagon.
It was the sequel to “true grit”- “Rooster Cogburn”
