Almost forgot…
I’m going to be buying a new pistol in the next few weeks, and I’ll pose the same questions to you as I have my readers.
What is your personal favorite in a pistol and why?
Right now, I’m leaning towards the Beretta PX4 and the Springfield Arms XD. Both in .40 S&W. I’m used to my old Beretta 92FS, but I think it’s time for a change.

Well I’m a 1911 fan, and I love my Kimber ProCarry II. Although I’ve been seriously drooling over Springfield Armory’s new Enhanced Micro 1911 in 9mm.
Colt Woodsman .22. I like the way it looks. I like the feel of the grips in my hand. I like the way it points, the ease of accurate shooting. I like the long barrel (see above).
If you’re talking big guns, I like anything in a double-action six-shooter. Colt. S&W. Ruger. I’m agnostic. My round preference would be a .38 special, but I’m not averse to a .45.
I’m not a revolver bigot, mind. I do like the 1911. My old man had a WWI-era GI .45 that was just purely sweet. But for some reason, the revolver just suits me better.

I like the super soaker Sneak Attack, myself.
Kimber Warrior, of course :)
.40 S&W is the near-perfect defense caliber. Buy any gun chambered in it whose magazines will also fit in a Kel-Tec Sub 2000. Go to Kel-Tec’s web site for details, then order a Sub 2000 folding carbine as a companion to the pistol, expect to pay about $350.
In the carbine, hot .40 S&W loads will exit the 16.25″ barrel of the blowback action at close to 2000 fps, with energy in the 600-800 #/ft range.
There’s something about that combo that just screams “urban warrior”.
Mine is a Glock Model 22 (Gen 2 police models are all over the ‘net for around $375).
Alternatively, you could get the Ruger pistol, and the PC4 carbine that takes it’s mags. There are some police Ruger carbines on sale now on the ‘net.
Got to agree with you about the XD, Dick. They’re sweet. Ship it off to Rich at Canyon Creek Custom for a trigger job, barrel refit and a polish job and you’ll have a tack driver that you’ll have to work to make malfunction.
Of course it makes a difference as to what you want it to do for you, but my favorites/wishlist guns just for the fun of shooting them would include:
1. The new High Standard stainless framed .22 with a 7″ barrel(See this month’s Guns and Ammo)
2. Ruger SRH .480 w/7.5″ barrel. With full loads shooting it gets old very quickly, but load it lighter and it’s an absolute ball to shoot.
3. Hi Point 9mm. (or .40) carbine. I know it’s not a pistol, but it shoots pistol ammo, and if you get the 9mm., it shoots cheap pistol ammo. It’s fun to shoot, relatively accurate, under $200 brand new, American made, and guaranteed like a Dillon press. For about $60 you can even get a sort of “bull-puppish” aftermarket stock for it.
Perhaps buy one of each?
….. Mr. C.
Colt 1991A1 .45
If I had to pick only on handgun from the safe to use the rest of my life, that would be the one.
Graumagus speaks for me.
Smallbore, either a Sig Trailside or a Ruger Single-Six. Both excellent pistols. ‘Course, the Ruger MkII is real nice, too.
Bigbore, I like 1911 autos and S&W revolvers. And the 1911s have the advantage of conversions so you can use them to shoot .22 ammo.
I did have the chance to shoot one of the Taurus Tracker revolvers in .45acp, that was a very nice one.
The XD is pretty nice, but I’ll have to say a 1911 (Para makes one in a 40) or a Glock, like Rivrdog said.
My buddy Contagion owns a seven shot .357 Taurus Tracker and I love the thing. I was put off by the goofy looking rubber “ribbed” grips, but they feel great.
That might be my next revolver purchase…. unless I lose my mind and get something in an elephant killing caliber that I can’t afford to buy ammo for :)
I like my XD 40 Tactical but it wouldn’t be the easiest to carry, well at least to conceal.
I used to own a Star 9mm Parrabellum Short (For short barrel). I miss the little tyke, could carry it anywhere and it had 8 in the mag. Nothing spoils a goblin’s day like shooting back when he thought you were unarmed.
By the way I sold it when I sold my Kawa’s, one always has to have some protection when on 2 wheels.
