if lance can,
last weekend, having saved a couple bucks from home improvement projects, I went out and bought a bike.
I am a big guy, and I didn’t want to end up with some wal-mart wonder that I’d destroy in a week, I wanted something that would bear my weight and last as long as possible. I ended up with this, which is a comfortable nice bike. I’m quite pleased, as I can sit upright and ride it, and I don’t look too ridiculous. I’ve only ridden a few times, and the cardio workout is about all I can handle! The point is to get my wind back, and while there are other ways, this is the only one, so far, that hasn’t pissed me off.
The other reason I chose cycling is this yellow band on my wrist. If Lance Armstrong can overcome testicular cancer to beat the smelly bike pants off all those french bastards in the Tour De France, by god, I can ride around my block a couple times, improve my health, maybe lose a pound or two.
At least, I hope so. I have to do SOMETHING.
Terri OBrien said, on the radio this morning, that Genetics load the gun, behavior pulls the trigger. This is true, I think, of alcoholisim, drug dependency, risk of disease, obesity. It’s a damned true thing. I will try.

That’s a nice bike. Its one of my fav. colors. Where did you get it?
Get into a regime you are comfortable with and stick with it.
If you have constant interruptions from work or family, try to adjust the routine. Otherwise just become “not available” during “your” time.
And above all, practice impulse control.

Wendy: got the bike at Bike pros on 41 south of 30. Come by and ride it sometime if you like.
Rich: Thanks. yeah, always tough. impulse control is een more difficult when your boss brings in 3 dozen Krispy Kremes every day!
There’s lots of thing I can do to improve my health from the impossible (give up drink, meat, stress) to the very difficult (measure everything you eat, lose weight) to the possible but inconvienient (exercise in some way neary every day).
I made effort on all fronts with mixed success, but my nurse educator said – I’ve seen lots of people with your condition over many years and the ones who do well long term are the ones who incorporate exercise into their routine. (she went on to say, does that make her exercise regularly? no she gets busy, lazy, has children, has a husband, etc.) But I noted after that whenever I do something active every day, every one of my numbers (blood pressure, blood fats, eye pressure, kidney function, weight) gets better and when I neglect every number gets worse.
I cycle because it is not boring, if I can’t do that I walk uphill, if I can’t do that I walk up and down my street (no sidewalks so I look funny). Improves my outlook too.
how does one get a nurse educator? Sounds like I need one.
It’s only been a couple of days, but the bike doesn’t show signs of becoming a hat rack, like the treadmill before it. I hope this takes.
I’ve heard it said that something done steadily for 30 days becomes a habit; I hope that’s true of this.
At my Doc’s every other visit is with a nurse educator. I like visiting her better than the doc because he is in such a hurry to get out of the f**ing room. It’s not his fault, what with insurance companies, medicare &etc driving down his pay to about $75 per patient visit and an office and insurance to pay for he simply has to see lots of people each day. Also, I send him a tie and her a gift card every Christmas. It’s not illegal yet as it wil be under national health care. You would not believe how much it changes our relationship. It can’t be the $25 I spend; it must be just the idea that someone appreciates them and sees beyond the white coats, bills, forms and sickness.
stick with it dude!
i thought it was more like 90 days to create a habit, but 30 worked pretty well on getting my boys back into the homework drill; so, go for it. Don’t expect to lose a lot of weight though, muscle is more dense than fat. you should though expect to see some inches come out of your waistline, eventually.
Heck, I’d be happy with more wind. To heck with inches or pounds. I just want to be able to do stuff without breathing heavily.
Regarding more wind. Must see a doc, exercise will help it but remember bj clinton, he thought it was lack of exercise and other things but eventually it was other. You can exaercise till doomsday but wind can be a simple clog or two.
I resist docs to the max but on this they can help so much. My wife is a Dr. and the thing is they can tune a heart like a Lotus with chems and a few other things. Really, with good care you can live well beyond what quality of life you have for years !!
