THe world’s most perfect article of clothing
is not, as Zonker might attest, “Anything that covers the scars” but the Boonie Hat:

I have been using an old safari hat to keep the sun off my wide-aspect ratio forehead for some time now, but the brim is stiff, and the hotter you get the more uncomfortable it gets. So I got (on the advice of someone in a [position to know) a boonie hat.
My god, are these suckers comfortable. They are dorky looking, too, in direct proportion to their comfort.
Wich I’d found out about these ten years ago.

I have been wearing them for years..they keep the sun off my redneck and the water out of my eyes when it rains..wad ’em up and stick ’em in your pocket..throw them in the washer when they get too stinky from sweat..beats hell out of a ball cap and they always get people to look at me kinda strange..especially when I am in my bib overalls and tennis shoes or flip flops.
Love to get one. Camo would be better, for me. Where did you find it?
I got mine at a local army navy store- they had US made ones, $30, and Honduran made ones, $9. Since I plan on abusing mine, I went Honduran. There’s a million mail order places and places on the net, too.
Never have found one large enough for my melon.
I have an OD one (U.S. made) that I got from our local Army/Navy store. It was a godsend during a fishing trip to O’Sullivan Lake in Canuckistan a few years back. You can also buy a mosquito net made to fit right over your Boonie hat for another few bucks. It increases the “dorky-looking” factor immensely, but it sure is good for keeping the bugs out of your face.
Personally, I like drovers hats. More brim, and to my mind better looking.
The Army screwed up when it went to the beret as the head cover of issue for the troops. They should have simply gone with the boonie hat and left it at that.
I base this on two things – One, both the beret and the patrol hat don’t cover squat except the top of your head, leading to sunburns on your ears, neck, and 80% of your face. Two – the first article of clothing that a troop buys when he finds out he’s getting deployed is….. the boonie hat. Troops know what the deal is.
As gramps would say you should have gotten two of them, one to crap in and one to cover it up. At least thats what he said to me when I showed up wearing one.
There’s no doubt of the greatness of this particular article of clothing, however the simple olive drab doo-rag outranks it in neccesity.
I got a similar one from the golf shop. Doesn’t have to be military issue..
GuyK, that just freaks me out some. That was my exact outfit this weekend while I was working down on my farm in the boonies.
I’ve worn these hats for years. Frankly, I think it’s the baseball hats that look goofy. These just look sensible.
Got mine when my son graduated USMC boot camp. Digital Marine camo baby!!
Rolling the sides and cinching the cord on top can make a cowboy looking had out of it if you really want to get some looks.
Just grabbed one at WalMart for like $6 about a week ago. Haven’t been brave enough to wear it in public just yet though ;)
