Next postal match
For one reason or another, I’ve been unable to do this for weeks. Now, I have gotten back to the range, and I’m ready. This time, though, there won’t be scoring, I’m gonna post everyone’s targets. Might need some help from folks out there doing that.
I’ll start out by showing the targets I shot Saturday. This is what you’re shooting against.

These were shot at 100 yards, from sandbags, sitting. The targets are Here. Download and print on 8.5×11. Any caliber over .300. Any scope.
Hang two targets side by side.
Shoot one cold shot at one target. Use the other target to shoot five shots to improve your aim, if needed. Then, one hot shot in the first target. You have until Monday Nov. 29.
See if you can do better than me. I expect at least one of you to do so.

Sounds great. Couple of questions.
First, what is the score based on? The second shot (or better shot, ie; the last shot) on the first target, the size of the 5 shot group, or some total of them all?
By larger than .300, I assume any .30 caliber ammo is fine? .30-06? .30.30? .308?
not sure when I’ll get to a range, perhaps we can extend the time to include Thanksgiving weekend?
No scoring. Just gonna post the targets here for everyone to see. The point is to see how good your guns are. I may go try to improve my effort.
Yeah, turkey day is a good idea. Changed the date.
Hey Neanderpundit, what state are you in? If it is East Coast maybe you could take me shooting sometimes?
Midwest, but check at Kim’s place, he has a listing of people who might be able to help you in your area.
Not sure my normal rifle range will allow me to use my own targets, I’ve never see anyone on the rifle range use there own before…I may have to go to another range a little further away.
Bitstream, most will let you use your own targets, just ask. Even if you have to tape these over targets you purchase at the range. I’ve never met a rangemaster yet who wasn’t a decent human being and anxious to be helpful.

Where on the East Coast are you???
I’m in DC but spend a good portion of the year in North Georgia/East Tennessee and also travel to the NY/NJ area regularly.
If your convenient to any of those, let me know and we can go shoot sometime.
100 yards? I can’t SEE the fucking target at 100 yards… ;)
(And Kim du Toit would just have a conniption if’n I put a scope on my .30-30 Marlin lever action…)
((I just wouldn’t feel right putting one on my M1 carbine, either…))
Doug,
If you’re further North than countertop’s location I’m willing to cover most of New England…
Well, Jay, it looks like you’re gonna have to go out and buy a new gun, aren’t you?
Gee, (WASR-10) og, that (WASR-10) thought (WASR-10) never entered (WASR-10) my head… ;)
I Live in MD. Shoot at Ft. Meade and On Target right near Ft. Meade.
I only have a poodle shooter so I am out on this one…
K
Looks like I’ll have to sit this one out too.
Discriminating against my .243, thats just mean. :(
JIU
I see some shopping in all your futures.
besides, you gotta KNOW someone who has a larger caliber weapon.
I’ve got plenty of larger caliber weapons: .44, .45… 12 gauge…
Just none that will fit this particular bill.
Let me know when you get back to handgun matches… :)
12 ga is definitely bigger than .30 cal. Why not use it?
You’d look a little goofy firing a pump shotgun from bags on a bench, but this IS a competition. Goofy looking beats not in the race, IMO.
cp,
Basically, I don’t YET belong to a gun club where I can shoot any of my shotguns… I inherited a bunch of 12/16/20/410 gauge shotguns from my grandfather when he passed away 10 years ago (plus I’ve got my Winchester Model 1300 I bought in October 2001…)
I’d rather try my 7½” barrel Ruger Super BlackHawk in .44 Magnum than a 12 gauge, though… Hmmm…
Judges? Can we get a ruling?
Duh. 100 YARDS. Not feet. Never mind – neither of the indoor ranges I frequent have that kind of space…
Looks like I am sitting this one out after all.
Besides, I need something with a scope – I have a hard enough time seeing the target at 25 yards, let alone 100…
Jay: you find you a long range, and I bet you’ll find someone willing to let you shoot their rifle.
Also: Anyone, even supported with a scope who can hit the target at ALL with a handgun, I’m NOT going to argue with- but this IS after all a rifle match. Now I’m more mobile, computing wise, I’ll have more matches soon.
Well, then, I guess I’m going to have to keep checking back…
I missed the last two .22 postal matches (the rifle one because I hadn’t gotten any of my .22s out of storage yet and the pistol one because I hadn’t fixed the Hi-Standard yet…)… I think you had another handgun match that I missed, too… Been meaning to humiliate myself, err I mean participate in at least ONE of these matches, but… Well, having two little kids to take care of is reason enough, but the real reason is that I’m one lazy fuck… ;)

Hmm time for me to buy that Remington 700 Police .308 and Vari-X III mil dot I’ve been drooling over. This seems like overkill for a first bolty, but I can hit shotgun shells at 50 yrds with a Marlin model 60 semi .22 and the .308 is a good all purpose and cheap cartridge, not to mention a ‘real’ rifle round :)
Unless someone would like to spot me for a Accuracy International AWSM .338 Lapua Mag ;)
Here’s a dumb question – Is 7.62x54R larger than 30 caliber??? I assume it is cause my 7.62×39 is. But frankly, I don’t know.
I mention it because I just ordered a Mosin Nagant (part of my Ammo Week purchasing feast) and a 780 round can of ammo. Thinking I might use this.
Can we get a judgement?
30 caliber is 7.62mm (approx) yes, it qualifies.
Postal rifle matches
dang, I’ve got a 7.5mm Swiss…of course if you’re not going to use a micrometer…
I’m gonna try. This year I may actually have a chance to hit the woods & be terminally rude to Bambi, so we’ll see.
Also, the weather has been so lousy for the last week, if it doesn’t clear soon all the ranges ’round here will be too damn muddy to reach the target line.
Well perhaps I’ll take the ol 30-40 Krag out, flip up the long range peep and see what I can do with open sights.
JIU
Z,
The 7.5 Swiss round became .308 ~ 1911. GP90/23 and GP91 ammo is listed at .3075 and .3086 respectively.

Yes, Robert, 7.5 does qualify. In fact, I’d like very much to hgave some Schmidt-Rubins in the competition.
Thanx! If I get some range time I’ll send in a target from the K.31. (In the meanwhile I’ll be digging up some reloading manuals. I obviously need to do some studying)

Sweeet! Nice shooting, Joe!
I have better targets on my wall at my office.
It would be more interesting if it were at 500 to 1000 yards but that would be tough for a lot of people to do. I’d be willing to use the same targets out to about 700.
LOL! Joe, not all of us are that good! nor do we have rifles that good!
I would need excellent conditions (zero wind and overcast so there is no mirage) to use the same targets at 700 but with a postal match you could chose your time and place.
And you might be surprised how easy it is. Try it. Consider it practice for Boomershoot 2005 (http://www.boomershoot.org).
That would be great- except that the very longest range I have access to is 275 yards.
Yup. That’s a problem alright. It’s tough for a lot of people to find a place to “reach out” beyond about 100 yards.
That’s part of the reason Boomershoot has a Precision Rifle Clinic the day before the event. It gives people a chance to “stretch” a little with the help of an instructor before actually feeling the pressure of trying to hit distant targets (the closest ones are 375 yards).
believe me, if I could afford it, I’d go.
Between weather and time, not going to be able to enter this one. The one day I have left before the end is going to be used chasing deer, unless the weather completely screws again.
Oh well, next match.
And I’d love to go to Boomershoot, too.
