Actual hunting
Wandering around the field yesterday with an actual rifle with actual cartridges felt damnably good. Like the state of indiana figured out I’m actually responsible to carry a repeating rifle.
Lots of deer. No bucks. Have to bring my antlers afield so I can do some rattling tomorrow. Plus, while I’m pretty scent free, turns out the stand I’m working isn’t. Will change that tomorrow.
Nice time of year to be hunting. I love being out in the field, I’m more comfortable there than anywhere else. And there’s so much to see, if you can be still- I saw turkeys, hen pheseants, squirrels by the dozen, and even a nimrod or two. (yes, some teenagers had driven a stolen Blazer into the field and were trying to unstick it. They ran off and the DNR had to go extract it, and return it to it’s rightful owners)

Lose the stand, set back off the main animal trails before the sun rises. I get one every time doing it this way.
Yesterday at Winamac we saw an early deer check in at about 7:30 am central as we left for a phesant hunt. The deer was strapped to the back of a small car driven by teenagers that pulled into the DNR building. We thought it was a small doe. Most peculiar was that the deer was not even field-dressed.
Today on the tally board at the check-in station the first deer checked in yesterday was labled as “illegally killed”. When I asked the DNR lady if a C.O. caught someone she explained that it was actually brought into the check-in as a button buck which is illegal to take. It was the same deer we saw.
Kids. Can’t blame them for trying but WTF?
Yeah, Dick, that’s the plan for tomorrow.
Looks like that big old buck I passed on in the fedral preserve won’t make it out. Some one went in, killed it, whacked off the head and then left the rest. Some assholes deserve a shallow grave.
stupid bastards.
