Exploder may be resploding
Spoke to the shop today, who found after some investigation that the crankshaft position sensor had actually spun on the harmonic balancer, causing the spark to arrive at the party quite late.
My baby’s coming home. They’re gonna do another test drive in the morning to confirm, but they feel confident they’ve found the problem.
Don’t know what the bill is gonna be yet, and I’m a little afraid, but my girl is coming home.

Interesting…
Let us know.
Damn. That would be pretty hard to diagnose in the driveway.
You’re not just a woofing Jeffro. Glad it was you and not me Og. I can’t afford too much more hair loss.
Timing light. Should have shown the the spark didn’t arive at the right time. All harmonic balancers still have a line engraved on them that will be in the light when firing. Just don’t have the little piece on the engine that tells you how far advanced you are.
I would bet that is how the ford garage found it. That and maybe a few more that had the same issue.
Glad the problem got found and I hope you have many happy miles ahead.
Well at least you got a nice well maintained Fuel injection system going for you.
Since you are keeping this vehicle for another 42 kajillion years, you oughta set up a timing stripe and pointer so’s you kin spot this kinda shit with a timing light the next time the fecal material impacts the oscillating blades.
Mark
The timing light showed it in perfect time. Mine was bad so I borrowed another. Thing is, the crank position sensor- which is mounted on the harmonic balancer- controls the spark. So The same item that had rotated ont he crankshaft was triggering the spark. So the spark showed up (where the timing light was concerned) exactly where it (thought) it was supposed to be.
Go figure. Good thing the guy figured it out.
