Exploder done
The last things I had to do were to put the radiator guard and the fuel tank skidplate back in place, and I got that handled this morning. And then took ‘er out for a ride.
I’m not gentle to cars. The Exploder has been used, and not used gently. And today I took it through it’s paces- certainly, not the kind of rockcrawling nastiness that Dick does to a vehicle, but I picked a wheel up here and there.
And everything seems to be fine. I’m tickled. And though it needs a cleaning, it’s good to have her home.

So, if I remember correctly, the exhaust manifold was getting red hot – what do you suppose was causing that? Timing?
Yeah, fuel burning in the exhaust manifold instead of the engine. Being ignited in the exhaust stroke.
Of course!
yeah always easier to troubleshoot after its fixed huh.
only reason I’m not kicking my own ass is even the pro was baffled by this one.
When people asked you if the distributor was 180° out, there was a clue there. Instead you and everybody else who has your current vintage of car dismissed the idea. Similar behavior though.
Well, PF, that would make some sense if there was a distributor.
That’s what I meant about vintage. Late model’s don’t have one. But the clue of the hot exhaust happens when the distributor is not aligned right.
So how would one apply that clue in extension? What besides the distributor could cause timing problems? I’m just saying that you came so close to having to abandon your girl that reconsidering how your thinking could have been redirected sooner is worth the inapplicable thought or three.
I never came close to abandoning anything.
You’d gone on to suspecting electronic part and not a mechanical misalignment.
And there are about a dozen things that can cause a hot exhast. Lean burn, rich burn, clogged cat, vacuum leak, to name but a few.
Nothing was out of the question. I was looking for something wrong. A timing light showed the spark occuring at the proper time. Fuel was arriving at the proper time. I had compression. There was no reason to suspect timing. There was no reason to suspect the harmonic balancer, the fix was discovered almost toally by accident.
Well it’s easy for a no-nothing like me to see the mechanical similarity between the harmonic balancer’s woodruff key and the alignment slot on a distributor equipped vehicle.
Please, just erase this interchange.
PF, the point is not that it was easy to find but that it was hard. Please tell me what diagnostic test you would have used to determine the misalignment?
Yeah, but did you ensure that the tires are inflated with Factory Air?
C’mon, did’ja?

Just got finished putting the Winter air in ’em.
Speaking of Dick- is he gone again?
