Shot Show, ammo
I looked at all the stuff at the show, including Ranier bullets and Hornady presses, and discovered something… well, unsettling.
I can buy reloads cheaper than handloading.
No, really, theres a local place that sells reloaded bulk ammo, loaded with the components I specify, for $250 a thousand. And they have a return policy on brass, $30 a thousand. Which makes the end price $220 a thousand. Between the cost of the components and the time I’d spend, I could not EVER handload this cheaply. Plus, they do a damned nice job.
So I’ll continue to handload for the rifles, and tell the fine folks at Precision Cartridge to take care of my pistol ammo needs.
Now I just need to get there and stock up.

They can do it cheaper because they can take advantage of buying greater bulk than we can, so it cuts down on there costs. Same reason that building a computer yourself can cost more than a cheap one.
What BobG said, as well as:
1) Investment in high-volume equipment
2) Hiring cheap labor
Either or both will cut the reload cost way down.
The one thing I don’t THINK they will be able to do is pump out tuned ammo in high volume (ie, precision ammo tuned to a particular gun, either handgun or rifle). I’ve looked into that as a business, and the cost per round is just way higher than most people are willing to spend.
There may be a niche market there, but it would be more for a hobbiest; not something someone could base a business on.
Or so I think… I love reloading, and haven’t figured out how to make money doing precision work. If somebody else can, then DAMN YOU and good luck :)

Hell for that price I’d buy some for you and we could head out to one of the ranges around.
How does their ammo work in semi-autos? There is a local reloader that is dirt cheap, but every time I put their ammo through my .45 or Ktreva’s .380 it jams.

how clean is the precision ammo? does it foul up your weapon? any short loads? I use .357 Sig and I can’t afford any short loads.
Shot 200 rounds saturday, it was sweet. No dirtier than factory. Got one bad case.
