Conservation
When I’m hunting I usually carry plastic garbage bags and rubber gloves. You’d be amazed at the shit hunters leave afield, and a lot of other people use DNR property as well. One of the commonest denizens of the forest is not the deer, but the cheap pervert. You can tell them by their spoor, which usually consists of a matted down patch of grass, an empty bottle of some kind of hard liquor, and used condoms and their wrappers.
Usually the worst of the idiots at least put out their butts but sometimes you come on a charred spot where some retard threw the dog-ed of a cigar and set fire to a couple square feet of forest floor, which was, thankfully, green enough to not burn far.
One time, coming on another hunter deep in the preserve, I picked up and put in my bag a beercan he’d just thrown away seconds before. “What are you, some kind of environmentalist asshole?” I’ve never been so damned close to shooting someone.
An environmentalist is a moron. They believe that the planet is more important than anything, and humans be damned. They have no idea what they’re doing, or talking about, and would not admit that at gunpoint. Their desired policies invariably do harm, and they impose stricter and stricter limitations on sportsmen, most of whom are true conservationists.
A conservationist wants the land he hunts, the water he fishes, to be as good when he is 90 as it was when he was 18. He wants those resources to be unchanged for his children’s children’s generations. He cares about his sport, and fights to keep it safe and the game he hunts plentiful.
This is an excellent piece which details the way conservationism has helped make this country what it is today. And how environmentaolism is trying to destroy the work that has been done. If someone calls you an “environmentalist” direct him to that website. And then give him back his teeth.

Very well said, Mr. Og.
Most hunters agree with you 110% about conservation. I sure do. So I must ask, why do you bother to go there?
I hunt Winamac SFWA and never encounter this type of behavior and rarely see habitat that has been violated like that. Hunters I encounter there are polite, respectful and friendly. We all share the same goal. I see the same guys year after year at the check-in too.
It could be that hunters who use your location know they can get away with that shit. I am surprised that antlered deer go anywhere near that place with all the deplorable human activity and the copious amount of scent they leave behind.
I stay away from Willow Slough because of personal safety. Northern Lake County assholes who carry a gun only once or twice a year like to go there, not me.
When I lost access to private land I gave the Slough a try. On my second day I was shot at climbing out of my stand at dusk. I felt the slug hit the dirt 5′ away before I heard the shot and never went back. It surprises me that there aren’t more hunting “accidents” there.
Other hunters tell me that Tri-County is just as bad. Brian of The Raghorn News told me his Lab was shot at Tri and advised me to stay away. He compared it to the Slough because of its close proximity to South Bend. Seems that lazy hunters from the city don’t like to drive too far and they bring their bad habits with them too.
You may want to try Winamac or Jasper Pulaski. You may not bag a trophy, gut your outdoor experience should be much more enjoyable.
If not me, who? Someone has to clean up after these fools.
One of my forestry bros got sent out west on a fire bust to work on a fire crew. He said they were working on public land(BLM, I think) cutting fire line when the guy flagging out the line came back and talked to the crew boss. Soon a Forest Service type shows up and they walk out ahead of the line. After a while the crew boss comes back and said they had to re-route the line to avoid an “archeological site”. This meant they’d have to cut about 300 ft. more line to get around the site to where they could tie in. When they took a break, my friend walked over to get a look at this “archeological site”. He found a rotted down shack and a shallow gully full of rusted bean cans and whiskey bottles. Said the whole crew was throughly pissed about the extra work for something like that.
I guess the moral is, given time, all that junk people drop in the woods becomes a historical artifact….Just a thought.
I would like to throw a piece of my mind on the pile. I am no environmentalist, but I worry about the rivers and lakes too (I like to fish). Who are those jerks who toss old appliances and tires in there? I’m glad to hear you’re doing your small part for the woods. Actually, picking stuff up sounds like a good idea. I may consider doing that where I live. I mean, I’ll start with cans and work my way up to tires (if I can figure out how to get someone to sponsor the return fees on ’em).
If you hear me saying I threw my back out, we’ll know I made good on my statement.
AS for the shack, as long as they routed the fire line so the fire got the shack, I’m happy. Sadly I suspect that didn’t happen.
It is necessary to realize that environmentalism’s core motive has nothing to do with the environment or natural resources.
Environmentalism is a stalking horse and a red herring for international marxist revolution, conceived out of a whole cloth by Vladimir Lenin and his sucessors. Why do you think Earth Day is celebrated on his birthday? Do you seriously think it was an accident?
And, even if all that were not true — by their fruits shall you know them. Just look at the outcomes of environmentalist action in politics, the media, and education. Pollution, for example, is a crime against property. Why then does every single green public policy prescription weaken private property rights?
Ethanol for another — it diminishes mileage, increases pollution, costs more to bring to market than gasoline, and takes more energy to produce than you can get out of it. Yet, this is an example of the fuels of the future? Of course not. The purpose is to increase energy costs to weaken western civilization in general and capitalism in particular.

Conservationists love the land and the wildlife.
Environmentalists just hate people.
‘Nuff said.
I think Aaron is close to the truth. That said, I think I may still carry some gloves and a bag when I’m out in it.
Do my part, maybe someone else will think it’s a good idea, and join in.
Republicans are for the Environment.
