Dollar store books
Every so often I wander intot he dollar store to peruse their book aisle, and I’m rarely disapointed. As often as not they have a big old stack of cheap books, and today was no exception.
The prize of the lot is “With a happy eye but..” by George Will.
Now, I’m not a HUGE fan, bt I picked it up and read this:
“What is liberalism’s appeal? Surely less it’s plausibility than the surprises it provides. Liberals constantly experience the excitement of the unexpected, the thrill of being startled by the unanticipated- if only by them- consequences of their actions”
I knew then and there I MUST spend a dollar for this book. That paragraph alone was worth it. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Dollar store books are very cool. So are library discard sales. There is a small community not too far from me that has a “Friends of the Library” group that raises money for the library by selling donated books and library discards. They always have a bunch of books for 25 cents (5 for a dollar!) and many others at bargain prices. I picked up a nice copy of “Engineering Drawing” by French and Vierck for a dollar. Totally outdated, of course, but very cool.
One time at a dollar store, I found David Carradine’s autobiography. Very interesting read that was written in a rambling, almost disjointed style (kinda like Carradine himself). I would have been disappointed if I had paid 20 or more dollars. But, it was definitely worth a buck!
My trash will end up there.
I like the occasional trashy book.
