Conservatism isn’t so much a political ideology as it is a weltanschauung. It will probably never go away. So long as people are people, there will be conservatives.
What may be failing is the bandwagon effect of those who only want to be seen as conservative because — for whatever reason — to them conservatism is “cool.” Those are summer soldiers and sunshine patriots — some of the ones we call RINOs — and they may be falling away, leaving the hard core exposed. And smaller.
Next? One would hope a more-sensible crossbreed of conservatism and libertarianism. Without the statist impulses of the former or the anarchist impulses of the latter.
Nope, just no one training new conservatives in public service. There was a flash in the pan in the 80’s, and those guys did nothing to train the next generation in the notion, the way liberals train for future liberals, and so there was an implosion. Bill Ayers and Rich Daley led to Obama, Bill C led to Hillary, Jesse Jackson got his son in Congress, etc.
All at once there was Friedman, Thatcher, Reagan, Buckley, then after them, silence.
Maybe if enough conservatives got the hell off of the blogosphere to get out into the world and support conservative programs and organizations, there could be a revival. Instead of longing for the Good Old Days (what would Reagan do), plan for the Good New Days.
I don’t think so.

Too bad we don’t have any conservatives in Washington, all we have are Democrats and Republicans.

No, we might be seeing the demise of the Republican Party, but Conservatism is alive and strong.
