Country music grates on my nerves
like a frying pan on a frog, but today, far from civilization, I could only get the local country station, which I turned down between weather forecasts, just to get a handle on the way my day was going to go.
Anyway, just between one of the forecasts and me hitting the “mute” I caught this song. If any of you ever wonder how I feel about the Ogwife, this is it. Kinda choked me up, actually.
Don’t know who the fuck Randy Travis is, but he said a mouthful right there.
Plus, someone in his band is playing a National Dobro, the sound of which I always loved.
Pity it’s so uncommon outside of country & western. Sure, I grew up on the stuff, but that don’t mean I had to like it. I used to have to eat brussel sprouts too.

I don’t like much country music, but Randy Travis’ voice just …does something for me. And he’s got some great tunes and lyrics.
But his voice. It locks in somewhere in the libido.
I’ve been picking and grinning with some bluegrass guys–totally out of my venue, and it’s the first time I’ve been around one up close. Mighty nice sound.
Uh… the dobro. First time being around the dobro. sheesh.
:o)
Travis’ big time was in the 1980’s. His nickname was “the voice”, for obvious reasons. For all I know he’s retired now. But I’m watching that video, looking at those cute women with the nice 80’s perms, and knowing there’s was probably not a tattoo in the whole female bunch. Ah, the good old days.
Anyway, if you like the above song, you need to watch this video, of a Travis song called The Box:

For all who’ve cleaned up their parents’ belongings after their parents died, and found that one or two extra nuggets of info about them that made them more human, more real, more the man or woman than just Dad or Mom, this is for you.
I don’t think he’s retired. Travis just played the local county fair about a month ago.
Love country music and love brussels sprouts!!!
Country music and rap. Name two things banned from my house,
Slash is correct, Randy Travis is not retired. He is not the big time headliner that he was in the 80’s, but still turns out some great music.
This is a song he did two or three years ago, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_I-sTv6NV0
I hated country music when I moved to Oklahoma in 1992. But it kinda sneaks up on you. The lines have blurred somewhat. Even the Eagles performed on the CMA Awards this year.
One of my favorite country performers is Steve Wariner, from Noblesville, IN. Here’s a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF4h42P9UyE
I used to strongly prefer Rock over Country. However after 9/11, I realized that by and large country artists share my values and love of this country. Sure, there are artists like the Ditzy Chicks who don’t get it, but it’s a free country and they can say whatever they want. Just like I can choose to ignore them.
Sure, country music has expanded since I didn’t like it as much ten years ago. But it counts for more that Nashville is the part of American culture that gets America.
Randy was born and raised just down the road in Union, North Carolina, which is also the hometown of Jesse Helms. I’m not much of a country music fan, but my ex was, so I heard a lot of Randy when I was married. Great voice.
If you like dobro, Jerry Douglas is the acknowledged master of that instrument. These days he plays with Alison Krauss & Union Station, but he does a lot of session work, also, and has released some solo stuff.
One of my FAVORITE songs!
His voice makes me quiver… I do prefer not to have to look at him too long, though.
Randy Travis’ voice is a National Treasure. I’m not a big twanger fan, but Randy can bring tears to my eyes.
