Conversation with the Boss
“i just got a gift from a supplier. Is it kosher for me to accept it?”
Blank stare. “What?”
“I just got a gift from E. I Just want to know if it’s appropriate to accept it”
“I heard you. What do you mean is it appropriate?”
“I mean should I be accepting gifts from companies our company does business with?”
“You gotta be kidding me. Someone gives you something and you think about something else but just TAKING it?”
“Yes. I’m concerned that it may be inapropriate”
“You’re too damned honest for your own good. Yes, you should take it, and enjoy it”.
“OK”.

Oboy. I hope it’s something edible, so that you could destroy all evidence of it. Or at least something that costs less than a couple hundred bucks. Anything more expensive could be construed as a kickback. You wouldn’t want the shit to hit your proverbial fan while you’re in the line of the jetstream.
As long as you don’t work for the “gubement” take it and enjoy. I mean old ideas like conflict of interest don’t mean nothin’ no more.
Is it a shiny, but unstable, non-insulating, non-dishwasher-safe travel mug with the company’s logo on it? I’d say don’t take it because it will just use valuable room in your cupboard until you take it out and shoot it.
A freezerful of cash? Still don’t take it.
A tin of cashews? Eat up!
Wait a minute.
Company A buys goods and/or services from Company B. B wants to show its appreciation to A because B realizes that A has options and A has opted to do business with B. So, B gives A a gift.
There is nothing wrong with that.
A and B, I’ll bet, are non-government entities and each can do non-criminal business with whatever or whomever they please. They can also show their appreciation by giving gifts, buying lunch, and providing entertainment if they choose to.
Sure. But I am always careful not to even show the illusion of impropriety. BTW, the “gift” was a gift card for $100.
Agreed. Avoiding anything that can be construed as truly inappropriate behavior is a good policy.
You should work in purchasing for the bidding of contracts where I work.
You’ld probably be the only one without a huge boat and gorgeous lake cabin.
I do get the impression that this woman (mid 50’s, diminutive, polish immigrant, works like a dog) is a little sweet on me. It might not be a kickback at all. I just checked with some of her other customers and none of the ones I spoke with got the same treatment, or would admit it.
There are large numbers odf companies/corporations that have heavy restrictions on who can accept what in the way of “gifts”. WHen I was with Lockheed-Martin the value was something like $10.00; and you better not be in the buying chain for products from that vendor.
Given your proximity to Chicago, I would think that this gift would be disallowed as it did not appear to be a bribe, but I may be mistaken.
Awwww…you got yerself a secret admirer. hehehe
Well, now you’re going to have to report it on your 1040 along with all those frequent flyer miles.
Then you tell her, “Sweet! Now I have something extra with which to buy my hot wife something!”
