You gun nuts will probably hate me, (Like I give a flying shit)
but I’d just as soon the Infantry hang on to the M16 (what are we up to, the A4 now?). Sure, clean it up and make it better, but there aren’t too damn many rifles that will allow you to knock down a man size target at 800 meters out using the iron sights. Yeah, I know what the publicized specs are, and I also know what these critters can do.
Oh, and unless you’ve humped 1000 rounds of 7.62mm through a swamp, uphill in the snow, while it was hailing like a motherfucker, I don’t wanna hear shit about the “lameness” of a 5.56mm round. Trust me, they will knock a full grown Liberal down, on the first shot. And really, that’s all that matters, right?

Not a great qualification, Dick. A .22 LR will knock a liberal down. We’re not at war (yet) with the liberals, but with the jihadis, and some of those (remember the Moros?) need more knocking down than a .223 provides.
I’m thinking that the next generation of US Military rifles should feature greater reliability than the M16 platform provides, and a slightly more powerful round, something in the .243 class.
It can knock down a man size target out to range, but one of the problems I see is that most of our main enemies seem to chew on whatever local weeds they have or listen to some crazy preacher and they get so fired up that they hardly even notice the 223 unless you get something vital.
Who needs a gun? Send a Maltese after them and they’ll fold like a towel. Just ask Chirac.
Hi all~ yes the M16 is a darn fine rifle, especially the ones you kids have now and they are only getting better! Seems to be the consensus of the so-called experts that the gun is a piece of crap but most o them shoot at paper on a range and that is it.
Until you shoot at soft targets you really don’t understand how much power most guns can generate. If you can’t put a man down with the 223 at reasonable ranges its you not the gun.
Proper tool for the job. Only Dick can say, but I’d guess an infantryman would need a rifle more than he’d need a machine gun in nearly all of his duties, gun wise. And though the AK is an amazing machine gun, the M-16 (with a true barrel, weapon not dropped too many times) is a heck of a rifle. Apples, oranges. But the AA-12 for city combat, well, gun pr0n there. I defer to Dick’s knowledge.
I hate to bust the caliber arguments, but a bullet that kills the bad guy kills him just as dead no matter its ring gauge.
M-16? They’re using the M-4 these days.
Rusty: Tell it to a number of combat infantrymen who’ve quite successfully hit people multiple times at short range with their M-4s, only to not have them die fast enough to immediately stop attacking.
I’m pretty sure the problem isn’t them, but the way a .223 doesn’t instantly kill people every time.
Now, no round will do it perfectly, but a bigger bullet tends to do a better job of it.
The only serious argument I’m aware of for .223 vs say 6.5 or a 6.8mm round is the incredible expense of a switchover for not just the US, but all of NATO, and not just the weapons, but the tooling and the huge stocks of existing ammo.
We’re stuck with .223 for the foreseeable future, at least for the mainstream forces.
Sigivald,
The M4 is a shortened M16, nothing more, nothing less. I carried one for quite a while.
If the m-16/ar-15/a-2/m-4 is so bad why do the Iragis want it? I mean they have more AK-47’s than they can count. The chose the m-16/ar-15/a-2/m-4 because our guys killed the bad guys using AK-47’s, a lot of the bad guys. It might be a bitch to maintain but an accurate weapon is always better than one that isn’t. Whatever you say about the AK, accuracy is rarely used to describe it.
Well, Dick, I’m fairly sure one of Og’s farts can knock a full-grown Liberal down.
Hell, one of Og’s farts could probably knock me on my butt, and I’m significantly sturdier than the average Liberal.
Not sure if that’s considered lethal or not, but it’s not necessarily a determinant for a capable weapons system.
I do defer to the wisdom of those who’ve actually served in these intarweb discussions, but for myself, I’ll generally choose the heavier round. Just personal preferance; and I’m choosing to do it, not being told to do it. Not sure if that matters at all.
Well, I’ve been writing the same thing for years, so no objection here.
