Just a reminder.
It is NOT NECESARY to come to a complete stop before turning right.
Really, it isn’t. Honest.

Sorry, in every state that I’ve lived in, where right turns on red were permitted, or when making a right turn at a stop sign, a complete stop was mandated by law….. Granted the sample is small, maybe 6 or 7 states…
PeterT
As a followup….
As of 1992, right turn on red is governed federally by 42 U.S.C. § 6322(c) (“Each proposed State energy conservation plan to be eligible for Federal assistance under this part shall include: …(5) a traffic law or regulation which, to the maximum extent practicable consistent with safety, permits the operator of a motor vehicle to turn such vehicle right at a red stop light after stopping, and to turn such vehicle left from a one-way street onto a one-way street at a red light after stopping.”).
Or did I completely miss what you are talking about???
One imagines Og is not talking about “right on red after stop”.
I had the same problem yesterday at the mall, Og. Idiot moron came to a full stop in traffic before turning in to the parking lot. He’s lucky he wasn’t rear-ended.
Or shot.
PeterT: you completely missed what I am talking about. I’m talking about the idiots driving down a single lane street (that’s one lane in either direction) and coming to a complete stop before making a right hand turn where there is no stop sign or light, just a side street. It happened to me fourteen times in a single block this morning.
That truly does depend on where you live, Og. From page 16 of the Tennessee Driver’s Handbook: “Stop behind crosswalk or stop line. Unless otherwise posted, you may turn right on red after coming to a complete stop and when no pedestrians or cross traffic are present.”
It was the same way in Maryland, where I got my first license, and while I do not know about any intermediate states between now and then, no cop has ever pulled me over for doing so in those states…
Hm. And that is what I get for not refreshing the comments before posting my own. Oh well.
Guess I could have made it clearer, however, I just assume all my readers have experienced the phenomena. I had a bluehair in an Acura come to a complete stop before pulling in her DRIVEWAY. This is how complete the stop was: She put it in park. You could see the backup light flash on/off.
You made it perfectly clear Og. When I read it my mind added “on red” when it wasn’t there. I realized it after I read your response. The mind is a terrible thing…
And yes you’re right. It is not necessary to stop before making a right turn at an intersection without controls present at least in NC.
How odd. The stupid trick cagers do around here is to almost stop before entering a driveway and then drive in a 1 MPH.
It also isn’t necessary to swerve left to turn right driving anything less than a six-wheeled truck.
God, Dan, I wish I had a howitzer every time that happens.
