OK, just to show
that there were some people writing decent music in the 70’s, here’s a few of my old favorites. yeah, there is some bubblegum among them, some hooky, earwormy shit, but I liked it.
Frinstance, Looking Glass’s other hit.
Dave Mason- we just disagree.
Do you know what I mean?
A Harrison favorite of mine, from the early 70’s too. Give Me Love.
yeah, there was a lot of good music then. In addition to the bullshit. Now my head is free of the crap. Your favorite early 70’s stuff in coments

YMMV…
I’ve never kept track of what decade what was recorded.
But I’ve always been partial to Nilsson, Frampton, and pretty much anything by Sweet.

I always thought that Elton John, up to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was damned good. Of course, there were four or five albums there that were, in essence, recorded in a single, marathon session at the Honky Chateau. But that was before he came out, before he moved to America and became an opinionated prat, and before disco.
I also liked Edgar Winter’s Entrance a lot, although I haven’t heard it or of it much since.
And I’ve always thought the Moody Blues’ Seventh Sojourn (1972) was one of the best rock albums of all time.
I could probably do a Top 100.

“If I could turn back the hands of time” Tyrone Davis, 1970. Sounded great, if tinny, on my Zenith transistor radio from WLS. OT, if I’m looking to buy some rural land in Indiana, any ideas whom I could contact? Thanks.
Freebird!
/had to be done
Wrong decade, but mention of this song is sure to pollute minds for at least part of the day

Eight six seven five three oh nieeeine….

For the 70’s I was a big fan of Warren Zevon. Roland the headless Thompson gunner in particular. The Bon Scott version of AC/DC was tops with me when I was a teen. My fave of theirs was Jailbreak.
Hocus Pocus by Focus.
*grins*
I didn’t appreciate that Raspberries song till years after it came out & I began playing music myself.
So many good bands & artists from that time.
2 of my all time favorite unknowns from that era-
Rory Gallagher and Roy Buchanan
Mark mentioned Edger Winter. Edgar Winters’ White Trash – Roadwork album was unreal good.
Anything by Ten Years After. H’yar:

I was still teething in the late 1970’s but since this is the Intarweb…
Anything by the Bee Gee’s.
Montrose…. all of their stuff w/ Sammy
Golden Earring..Radar Love
Robin Trower
Steely Dan
mmmmmmmmmmmm yeah!
The Dan were certainly influential in my early years. As was Elton- “Funeral for a friend” was my first Radio “bathroom” song, all those years ago, a snotnosed kid in front of a microphone.
Deep Purple – Machine Head: Worst song on the album was “Smoke on the Water”. Raspberries song hit about the same time as puberty. No need to say more than that. Throw in the Who, Alan Parsons Project, and Queen. And of all the Beatles, George was always my favorite.

What did they smoke back then? Oh, never mind.
Off-topic: The 70s do the 50s! John Denver and David Essex in a medley of Buddy Holly songs. Surprisingly good, er, “far out.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-Few-V5JK4
