Magical Mystery Tour
The dog has gotten increasingly adept at opening the gate at the kitchen. At first yoiu didn’t have to latch it, just close it. Then you had to latch it. THen the dog ate the pin that links the lift to the latch, and latching it made little difference.
Now the dog knows to lift the arm and pull back the latch with his paw. So I drilled a couple holes in the arm and put on a bungee cord. Then he learned to chew off the bungee cord.
All in order for him to make his way into the magical, mystical, forbidden kitchen.
Where no food is stored in lower cabinets anyway, and the best he can do is graze the floor for accidentally dropped Crunch Berries.
See, we used to have the gate up predominantly to keep the cat from trying to eat the dog. Cooney loved to annoy Max, right up to the end.
Guess it keeps him from getting bored while we’re at work.

I forget, is Max a beagle by any chance? I had a beagle that should have been named Houdini.
yep. A houdini beagle indeeed.
A relative of mine had a large dog that could muscle the refrigerator door open and a smaller dog that could paw open containers like mayonnaise jars. They worked as a team.
Little bastard must have some ferret in him: they think anything they can’t get into and anywhere they can’t go is a violation of natural law. Ex and kids over the years had two that learned to open zippers
I suggest you forget about the gate, and just leave a raw Choice Delmonico on the kitchen floor before you go to work every day. Just spitballin’ here.
Crunch Berries are dog crack. Can’t fault him, really. The only thing that could possibly be better would be rabbit flavored Cap’n Crunch. Or maybe just run that damned Trix rabbit through the room…
I must have been born lucky. My dog, Ozzy is a 100# Amstaff. Easiest going most laid back dog in history. Even as a puppy, Oz had only one “mistake” in the house and he had it in the bathroom on a vinyl floor. We keep his food in an open bag in the kitchen and we often leave him in the house alone for extended periods. Extended periods being not more than 10 hours. He chews only his own toys, not even the cat’s, has never gotten into his food supply other than what’s in his (and the cat’s) dish. His vice is that if we leave him home when we leave he sleeps on our bed, if the bedroom door’s shut, he sleeps on the front room couch. I know, because when we come home he’ll be on his bed and the couch or bed will have a warm place on it. He doesn’t chase cats, and loses interest in other animals as soon as they find a hiding place or go up a tree. One of the funniest things I ever saw was a rabbit he was chasing turned on him and chased him halfway down the block, I nearly wet myself at that one.
On the other hand he comes completely unhinged if someone tampers with a vehicle he’s sleeping in. A kid at the mall a few years ago threatened to sue me because he soiled his baggies when Ozzy objected to the him trying to jimmy the door lock. The arresting officer made the kid sit on his puffy coat in the squad car. Nice cop. He asked me in passing if I carried. I said, “sometimes”. He said, “You should always have your piece with you”, these little shits are getting bolder and bolder”.

my goodness, I didn’t know you had a cat. Who’d have thought? :D
You saw pictures of Cooney here, I’m sure you even commented on them!
My beagle, lucky 13, decided to open the fridge the day before christmas a few years ago. Him and the rest of the fur critters feasted on the Ham. We had to put a latch on the fridge until we got a bottom freezer unit.
My cousin with the two dogs had to put latches on both refrigerator doors. The large dog I mentioned was an Irish wolfhound, and she could open the top mount freezer.
The Dog Cold War.
Can they be controlled?
Can they be contained?
Must we go to war?
Oh, the humanity.
