I can no longer wear shoes
for any length of time, it kills my ankles. I need the support of a pair of at least 6″ boots, and at the end of a day, I can still move. If I wear shoes other than to church, I’m incapable of movement by noon.
Getting old is not for pussies.

An older friend of mine has been telling me that for years he’s been wearing support hose and it makes all the difference.
I don’t wear boots just to make a fashion statement. :)
Yeah, I heard that somewhere
Tam: If your boots made any statement,it would be “How about I kick you in the nuts!”
Man, when you started with never wearing shoes, I was almost afraid to read the rest.
I don’t have a problem with my ankles, but I’ve worn inserts in my shoes for nearly 20 yrs after tearing the planar(?) tendon on the bottom of my foot while bowling. With’em, no problem. One day without them and I can barely hobble across the room.
For that matter, I can’t get my foot into pull-on boots. I’d love to be able to wear some ropers but I can’t get the bloomin’ thing on. I can’t flex my feet enough to slip into them.
If it’s not one thing, it’s another.
Yep. Cru, have you seen the Danner boots? Mine are the most wonderful thing I own- they also unlace easily, so I can just about completely open them. I bet I could put them on a mannequin. I have the Desert Arcadias, which are not exactly fashionable, but man, what a pair of boots!
Dude, with as much damage as you do to your toes with knives and wrenches and stuff, you should NEVER take off your boots.
Wife might take issue with that
PJs with shinguards.
Og –
Check out the HAIX line of boots. I picked up a pair at the SsHOT SHow last year and still wear them every day. Best I ever got out of any other brand before these was maybe six months before they were gone.
I have very low ankles and used the right one as a pivot for my BMW R50 many years back. Haven’t worn shoes except for one day formal events for in more then forty years.
I know this will probably cause a case of mass regurgitation, but I haven’t worn anything but contact lenses to bed for forty years. As a dear friend who shall remain nameless once told me, for some, nudity is the best birth control.
PJ’s are fine for girls, but a guy like me can’t wear ’em, you end up with the boys being strangulated and you have to leap out of bed painfully to wrest them from the grasp of whatever. At best, i can wear tighty whities to bed if i need to, and even that is uncomfy.
I like the look of the Haix boots but I bought Danner specifically because they’re made in the USA. I have not been disapointed.
Dude, there’s nothing wrong with sleeping in the buff, but how about your contacts? :o Seriously?
I have owned nothing but Danner boots for a couple decades now. A couple weeks ago I finally walked the soles off a pair I bought many moons ago. Literally thousands of miles of hunting and hiking and not one blister. I wore the brand new replacement pair all weekend for break-in. They didn’t need no stinkin’ break-in…. they’re Danners.
I currently have three pair: One “dress” pair, one uninsulated pair for warm weather and one insulated pair with 1000 grams of insulation for cold weather.
You’ll get my Danners when you cut them off my cold, dead feet.
You know a guy is getting old when his most cherished possession is his Danner boots and a brand new pair of Smart Wool Expedition Weight socks slid lovingly on his feet will bring tears of pleasure.
Sigh.
I wear flip-flops until cold weather (below 70-degrees) forces me to put-on socks and a shoe-like thing, fortunately it only lasts a couple months. My dogs need to breathe and run free.
Dirt, the odd thing really is, I can wear crocs with no difficulty. barefoot or shoes, not so much.
Technical question:
I had to backspace and quickly hit the stop button in order to get firefox to stabilize on this page. This is the first time in 3 days I didn’t have to use a different browser.
Who else is having this problem at Neanderpundit? Has anyone discovered a permanent fix in the firefox settings?
Note that the left column with all your links has not filled in — I stopped the browser before it could load.
Og: see if there be something still over there that’s causing the problem for some of us. Maybe reload an earlier version — say last Monday’s. I know yours is working, but mine is still problematic which means I’m not the only one. Of course, you’re probably getting more hits this way right now — but I’ve a feeling it’s a short-lived increase. LOL
“PJ’s are fine for girls”
I meant for her. Because of your boots that you didn’t take off.
Ah.
Believe me, the places my boots go, I don’t want to take them to bed with me. if not for a regular, liberal dousing with Gold Bond, the wife would make me keep them out of doors.
Pascal, I have the same problem. I see a blink of the page, then it redirects to a blank page. I’m using MSIE to see this page now, and it autodirected also, but I was able to stomp it dead in IE.
All this instability began when Og got rid of the banner ads. They must’ve left a residue on the way out, like a bad renter busting up the unit in excess of the deposit.
I’m in need of some Jack Lambert style ankle-highs, if I can find them. Boots are fine for winter. Wearing sneakers is not supporting the ankle, plus the foot slides within the sneaker, due to the sides busting out. With a EEE, even with wide widths, eventually I either shoot out the outside of the shoe under the pinkie toe, or out the inside under the thumb toe, separating the shoe from the upper part of the sole. Taping the ankles is ok, but a royal pain.
“Boots are fine for winter.”
I used to think the same thing until I started wearing Goretex lined Danner boots and wool socks year round. This past weekend it was 100 degrees and high humidity down here in the Bible Belt and, as usual, my feetsies were most happy.
I NEVER wear cotton socks and haven’t for many moons. All my problems with athlete’s foot and peeling, dead skin ended when I started wearing wool socks exclusively. Folks think I’m crazy but I don’t care. It works…. and that’s all I care about.
MTS: I took that down in an effort to fix this problem. It did not cause the problem.
I get flip-flops with some arch support, but they cost more.
I’m not having any problems with the website – but I don’t use any Microsoft security-fail web browser.
Actually, it’s firefox that seems ot be having the problem. I can get here via IE just fine
No problem with firefox v3.5.10 but this is it’s first use on Og’s site.
Also no problems using my regular firefox v3.0.8 .
Borepatch and other security-weenies have got me convinced – Firefox 3.6.6 running AdblockPlus on Windows 7 Pro…
