Dan Wheldon Drinks the Milk.
Sure, sure. Danica Schmanica. She drove well, she finished fourth, she had a good run. She’s also pretty goddamned full of herself. Give me an Helio Castroneves anyday, someone who knows it’s about the fans. Someone who climbs out of his car and climbs the fence. I LOVE Helio.
And now? I LOVE Dan Wheldon. I managed to ignore the excess Danica coverage, and saw something that I never, ever saw before: Dan handed that famous bottle to his crew chief, and shared it with his crew.
Now, maybe this always happens, I don’t know. I know I’ve been watching every indy for as long as I can remember, and this is the first time I ever saw the crew share the milk. Dan was gracious and proud, and made it clear this happend FOR the fans, and WITH his crew. Bully for him. Pity he was lost in all the publicity.
Michael Andretti finally got a win. Too bad Danica got all the attention. She did a good job, but was extremely lucky, too. She’ll be back to see if it was a fluke. Congrats to Wheldon and the Andretti team. It was the most exciting finish I’ve seen in a while.

She was a little steamed because at the end, the Andretti team conserved fuel by drafting on her, keeping her in the lead and keeping her fuel consumption high. Rahal didn’t have time to counter that move, and as a result, she just couldn’t generate the needed fuel pressure when she needed it.
She probably still wouldn’t have won, but perhaps finished third.
