Damned wistlepigs
Managed to put three CB caps in one yesterday before he ended up in the great beyond. Wish the hell I had a can to use something a little more powerful.
At point blank, of course, I use the h&r top break. The little bastards will sit right on the terrace while I load the gun and open the window. Last one died with a mouthful of MY BEANS.

Talk to your neighbors. Mine have told me they won’t report me if I start thinning the local rabbit population. They see it as a service to the community.
Those sound like some damned complacent groundhogs. Any I’ve ever seen were absolutely paranoid.

.22 Short out of a boltie rifle. A carbine will be plenty of barrel. It will be as quiet, or quieter, than the CBs out of a revolver.
You’ll benefit from the extra sight of radius and steadiness of a shoulder mounted armament. The groundhog will benefit you by dying more abruptly.
With an extra lovely dose of lethal velocity, what’s not to love?

By the way, Standard velocity .22 short Hollow points, in a long barrel are quiet and effective. They have put paid to many a marauding tree rat out of my Winchester 9422.

Have both caps and sub sonic. Either beats the air rifle for range. Sub sonic is the noisest, not to bad out of a long barrel.
I found the die quickes if you can put about 32 grains of lead at the base of the skull. eye shots work good too.

That Beeman RS1 I bought a year or so ago literally tears the treerats around here apart.
Definitely more than enough velocity to penetrate even a human skull and accurate as all get out.
A bit more complex, but a lot more fun. Any rimmed centerfire rifle round, 5gr of pistol powder of your choice powering a lead roundball pressed into the neck of an unsized case. A bit of something greasy, Crisco will do, applied to the ball after loading. For a little more velocity, open up the flash hole.
My rifle of choice was my Krag sporter until I got an H&R Topper in .30-30 Win. No more noise than a BB gun and that 35-40 gr roundball will go right through a bun rab size critter at reasonable (+/- 10 yd) distances.

Dick: I have a Sheridan, but it’s loud. How loud is that beeman? I have annoying, touchy neighbors.
I got a chink .177 for the pidgions. Louder than .22 short.
Not too loud, but it is louder than my old pump up Daisy.
I remember trying to shoot annoying grackles with a break-action air rifle. They stood right there cussing at me until I got it loaded, then flew around the house before I could get a shot. I was constrained by backstop and busybody neighbor considerations, so never had a good un-observed line of sight on them. I hate it when they eat yer mangoes.

I use these for shooting without disturbing the neighbors. I use a Henry Repeater.

The Colibri ammo is good stuff. SOme rifles has trouble getting out of the barrel, some works very well in; those it works in, VERY quiet.
Can’t remember the specifics, some company makes a pellet rifle with a suppressor on the end; wonder if you can buy/make one for a air rifle without causing some minion of the Feds to have a stroke?
