Damned fools.
Posting from the old (and still, after all these years) bulletproof Win2000 box, because the XPPro box has been fucked up by a rootkit from hell. Sonsabitches. I think I got it all but I’m probably gonna just get a new hard drive and bring it back up from scratch.

Sorry to have company in this. I’ve still not replaced my hd cuz you know why.
Yep, it’s going around. I lost 2 hard drives on two different machines in 8 days to a System32 virus and rootkit from Hell…different creatures on each machine. Funny thing was, I was NOT doing dangerous surfing, in fact, was just looking for truck parts online in both cases. My machines WERE well protected, or so I thought…
Problem on the oldest XP box was that it came preloaded and I didn’t have a WINXP disk to reload it, just the apps disks, so I stuck in my spare drive and tried to reload that from disks I had for my wife’s machine. DOH! can’t do THAT either, you get all the wrong drivers, and even though the disk has the correct ones on it, or at least some that would work, you have no way to get to them because you can’t input.
Then I got that mess on my Verizon netbook. Verizon, of course, gave me the cold shoulder. Geek Squad says they will clean up the hard drives for $200 each…I might get them to clean up the netbook, although I am tempted to just replace it next month when my “window” opens for doing that. The same $200 will get me a new netbook with Windows 7 Home Premium on it, then that will match this new E-Machines box I’m commenting with now…
Well, if the hard drive still works, why not experiment with Ubuntu? I have Ubuntu installed on my netbook, and it’s mostly a worthy alternative to Windows. And it’s free, which is always a good thing.
