Range report: M1 carbine
I took the Carbine to the range today, and Mike and I and Ed shot it. It was extra sweet with pie, and I was glad we had something with a little bit of recoil so Ed could experience something a bit more than the 22 he brought.
I was shooting the steel Herters ammo, the stuff Cabelas is selling for $140/500. it runs fine in the carbine.
I replaced the original, stamped steel trigger group with a “real” one from Dirtcrashr early this year, it was a great deal and the new pieces run awesomely. The trigger is smooth as silk, and the lower really fits the magazines more tightly. About the only other thing I might do is to put a flattop bolt in it, because the round top is rubbed shiny on the receiver-I can now see why they made the bolt flattopped.
Shot the MKii for a while, and Ed seemed to like it enough he wants one of his own. He could do worse.

I bet you could flatten it yourself with a file easily enough…
Right?
Awesome! I’m seroiusly glad it works so well! Flattop was the original, the round bolt was a later development and supposed to be stronger, I think the original looks mo’better and I’m not in combat.
My M-1 carbine hasn’t been test-fired since the addition of the new CMP stock.
With the new furniture, I hope it works as well as it did while serving as Kim du Toit’s trunk gun.
The M1 Carbine is a truly classic.
I do lurves me some M1 Carbine. It is certainly one of my very favorite firearms.
Seems I remember that they went to the round- heavier- bolt when the M2 version was developed, to handle the stresses of automatic fire better.
By the way, I’m told that in the case of the M2 you can buy and register the trigger group as the automatic weapon, and when you wear out the carbine(can be done at those rates of fire) just put the trigger group in a new rifle. Haven’t checked that out for sure, just something I’ve been told.
