Look, I am almost utterly bereft of what most people consider “conscience”, so I can make the restitution for the rape/molestation charges last several weeks before I even BEGIN to get into the espionage shit. I figure I can keep the tard in constant pain for a few months, during which time he’ll not only give me all the people who work for him but spend hundreds of hours on the stumps formerly known as his legs begging to die. Then, with his tongue removed so he can’t swallow it and kill himself, and his spinal cord severed at c2, he can spend the rest of his very long life alone inside his head considering what he has done, being raped by orderlies and eating strained peas through a tube stuck up his nose.

I’m not in favor of physical punishment on this one.
Rather, put him in isolation, give him books to read and things to do but no human contact, and let him know in no uncertain terms that he’s not worth remembering except at mealtimes. Torture only makes him a martyr in his own mind. To hit him where it really hurts, you have to go for the ego. They have to know that they’re not worth your time. “Men” like that, it’s the only true way to break them.

I have to agree with Joanna on this one. The man’s crime is trivial (compared to — say — bin Laden’s) — the “theft” of documents from secretive governments: not entirely bad, his person insignificant. The stain on the soul of one making him suffer is just not worth the effort.
But rather than lock him up, I’d prefer to see him live the rest of his life on the run, with every man’s hand turned against him.

Not so much, no. Victims of head injury, epileptics, and the insane have been known to choke to death on their tongues accidentally and purposefully. On more than one occasion I have had to prevent an epileptic friend from choking on his tongue. And while it’s not “Swallowing”, strictly speaking, it can be fatal.

You know, I’m not sure that a deterrent effect exists for fanatics. Much more to the point is preventing HIM from doing it again. Removing him from society one way or another accomplishes that. On that, I suspect, we can agree.

I must admit that I take some small comfort at this administrations floundering about, trying to find something to do that doesn’t show them as being weak, indecisive, morally corrupt and totally clueless as to what to do. I’m hoping that their behavior is being noted for use in the 2012 elections.
As far as Assange, I’ll be happy to offer assistance and suggestions to ya Og, about other equally painfull means of convincing Assange of the error of his ways.
And as a finale, the private should be tried for wartime treason by a courts martial, then executed by firing squad. (And I’ll volunteer for it.)
