On music:
Today I listened to a different radio station than the usual. Wife is out of town, driving the Exploder, and I’m driving her honda in the interim.
So I listen to one of the two decent stations her stereo can get clearly, and I hear the opening chords of a song I’ve loved for soooo long, Landslide, by Stevie Nicks. It sounds strange at first, but I attribute that to the very small speakers in the car.
Then, then, it starts. The Dixie chicks are singing Stevie’s song.
Now, I don’t give a shit about the dixie chick’s politics. I like a few of their songs; but this, this is heresy. Stevie, with her clear sharp smooth vocals, stevie made those songs hit you in the heart, made them sink into your flesh like the edge of a razor, they wounded you and you thanked her and you kept listening no matter what.
And now, I cannot get this out of my head:
“En ah Saw mah reflexxion en a snoaw kuvvered heal, teal a laaan slyde brung me dowen”
They. Must. Die. Nothing can be more wrong than taking a song so perfect and make it a trailer trash anthem. Fuck them and the horse they rode in on and fuck the agent that agreed to let them record that song. My God Almighty.

Funny, this post on Fleetwood Mac caught my eye a few days ago, despite it have “msn” (puke, gag, cough) in the url…

Not a bad article…
And I agree with your sentiments expressed above, BTW.
It’s a shame, isn’t it? Nicks/Mac were completely unique- Dixie chicks will be replaced by three more trailer girls in about a year. A shameful thing to do to a nice song.
I guess the lyrics themselves sum you up quite accurately:
“Well, I’ve been afraid of changes…”
LOL! Change isn’t a problem. Murder is the problem. The song wasn’t changed, it was killed. Lots of artists do covers and don’t murder the songs, there are a lot of covers I like a LOT more than the originals. This is just wrongness, pure and simple.
Yeah, I guess murder IS the problem. Your words: “They. Must. Die.” Kind of a strong punishment for their “crime”. With violence against women being so pervasive in this society, can we please be a little more thoughtful about the words we unleash, even if they’re just for “effect”, or if they’re just to be “funny”? Thanks.
Well, it’s just a dumb cover. A good cover re-inevts a song and brings something new to it. Elvis’ version of “hound dog”, for example….the Dixie Chicks is just more or less a note for note rendition, which makes it little more than expensive kareoke….
Agreed, chris. Hendrix’s “all along the watchtower” too.
