I am always talking to people
about how to take care of their cars. Few do, consequently folks who get many hundreds of thousands of miles on their vehicle are few and far between. One of the things I try to impress on people is the importance of monitoring their fluids, and especially if you see any fluids under the car.
The Exploder sits parked outside my hotel window right now, and there’s a puddle under the front bumper. I braved the cold to put a coffee filter in the puddle, and sure enough, it’s Mobil One. A red stain would have meant trans fluid, a green one coolant, a blue one windshield washer fluid. The oil cooler is leaking where the line meets the cooler. It’s a gradual and annoying drip, and I’ll fix it in the comfort of my garage, not here. I’ll make sure it’s topped off and drive it home.
Poor old girl. I hate to make her stay out overnight in weather like this.

Don’t get me started on Isuzu engines that send their oil into black holes (no puddles or drips on the ground)at the (apparent)rate of about 1qt/1000mi.
But if you do I will tell you that using Mobile one and not being concerned because you didn’t have time to change the oil at 4000mi like you usually do will cost you about $4500 for a new engine…
Needless to say I check the damn stick at least once a week now.
I use Mobil One, and I send a sample to Blackstone Labs, occasionally. They always say “You could run it a little longer” about the oil I send. I change about 10,000 miles. The sploder has 0ver 395,000 miles.
The sploder sends oil to that same black hole. I don’t have leaks, other than this new one, and it uses about a quart every 4,000 miles.
Burns it. Some oil get past the rings and some slides down the valve guides. It will get worse and can get fairly bad before the motor dies. Old 216 sixes used a quart to a tank of gas and did not leave puddles nor smoke too bad. Mostly they went a little longer.
No question, Paul. Nature of the beast that any recip engine will bypass a certain amount of oil, it’s just funny on a machine that never smokes for a moment.
Maybe the cat is scrubbing the exhaust?
lol. Could be- but I’d think it would be choked shut with residue, by now.
Good point. Original cat then? Impressive!
