Dry as a popcorn fart
Been dry here for a month. Rain all around, but hardly a drop on my yard.
At the low end of the yard, there’s a broad ditch, home to small catfish and more than a few mosquitoes. Sprayed some Roundup on the weeds on the shore, and it seems that someone mixed the Roundup with some Miracle Grow.
That is a dandelion. It’s about 6′ tall.
My grass is dead, and in it’s place grows some tall weed that make the lawn look as if it has hair. Thinning hair. The only thing that seems to be thriving are the weeds, and in a few minutes, I’m gonna go outside and thrash the weeds down, mow the lawn’s hair. I’m gonna try not to dehydrate as I do. I know, I’ll blame it all on “global warming” and get a gummint grant to pay to have my lawn watered!
Update -For Jim:
No, it’s not a dandelion. I just went out and grabbed a couple heads off:

Tell me what it is. The top is an unopened bud, the middle a partially opened bud, and the bottom a bud gone to seed. Sorry not to have a better picture of that, it doesn’t contrast well against the white.

The wife calls bull shit Og!!! (Yes, she was severely disciplined for speaking out of turn and questioning your obvious authority on the subject).
After she stopped bleeding I asked her, “If it’s not a dandelion, what is it?”
She doesn’t know of course. Isn’t that just like a bloody woman?!?! They don’t know what the real answer is, they only know that YOU are wrong!
I don’t know how I put up with such nonsense. I am a very patient man.
But now that I think of it, a 6 ft dandelion? That don’t make sense.
hello,
umm yeah, I guess I had to back up my claim that your “common weed” was not a dandy lion.
It is found over most of North America, some of south America and the British Isles, it is of the same family as the dandy lion.

Scientific Name: Hieracium umbellatum
COMMON NAME: NARROW LEAVED HAWKWEED
yeah, so hope that answers the flower question. And hope I have identified it correctly ^_^
FOUR cars???
‘Scuse me if I can’t exactly work up a lot of compassion for a man who has two cars for each driver… ;)
Your idea of a “slacking” day and mine are significantly out of alignment, my friend… Of course, my “slacking” day consists more of cutting the lawn, hacking the weeds, then sitting on the couch watching Disney movies with my kids all afternoon. Popping up popcorn and such, silly stuff like that.
And if G-d wanted us to wash our cars he’d make soap come down with the rain…
Not my cars. The car I was doing brakes on was not my car either.
“member of the dandelion family”?
Dandelion.
There are six varieties in my yard, that I know of, all “members of the dandelion family”. I choose to call them “dandelions” rather than their latin names, or even their more common names, because to me they’re dandelions. Annoying, nasty, weeds. And I STILL bet you never saw one six feet tall.
And, no, by the way, it is not a narrow leaved hawkweed,(which grows like a bush and not a single tall stalk) we have those too. If I clarify, and say “that is a member of the dandelion family. It is about 6′ tall” does that satisfy your BS detector?
:)
Of all the bloody cheek!!!
I am sorry for that outburst Og, if my wife has embarassed me in front of respected academics like yourself before.
I suspect she suffers from a similar phenomenon that afflicts many males (who shall remain nameless), like the fellas that look through the spotting scope and that deer you are looking at is a HUGE trophy animal…and once you have dumped it, it turns out to be a Bambi…
Not that anything like that would ever happen to guys like us! Our formidable powers of observation preclude such embarassments, dontcha know!
:)
ROFL! My deepest respect(and thanks!) to you AND the Mrs.. Someone needs to keep me honest.
hey, if it looks like a duck……
Still, ANY 6′ tall weed is a sign I need to do more yardwork. So, it all comes back to me, as you see.
That’s a big dandelion! You oughta pull that sucker. Oh and around here (Colorado) they are now referring to weather conditions as “crunchy” that’s the sound the grass makes when people walk on it. It’s dry, It’s hot, darn it, it’s hot and dry.
I can’t water my lawn enough.
Dang, I can’t believe you gave up so easily!!!
The plant is actually a “marsh Sowthistle”, one of a family of edible dandelion like plants that fill my weekends with toil.
yes, Virginia, it’s not a “common” dandelion, but a member of the family. Do you want some? I’ll save you some seeds. Really
