Brigid muses over lifes turnings…
She often writes things that hit home, though our lives are very different.
I have been, all my life, the go to guy for bizarre and eclectic trivia. None of it has ever done me a bit of good- people suggested to me “You should go on X game show” I always had to explain that while my memory was more than adequate, my retrieval system is flawed. I could have the entirety of the Knights of Columbus initiation ritual up there,(actually, it is!) but be unable to retrieve it unless specifically prompted to do so.
I was at a customer today, who was asking me “Why does this robot do X?” and it took me back to the time I was programming that very robot. The customer at the time whined “Why doesn’t the robot wait in front of the machine so it can be ready to load?” fact was, the robot only took three seconds to get to the machine, and you never knew what machine was going to be ready next. So having it wait was always a waste of time, but the customer could never be convinced of that fact so we spent an extra week writing meaningless code so the customer could say he’d done something to reduce cycle time. And now it’s costing trouble and time and aggrivation, exactly as we said it would.
Discussing this with a co-worker, it dawned on me WHY my retrieval system is horrible, for the first time. I recounted the conversation we’d had, and he said “great memory”. I said “It’s a curse. Imagine having crystal clear memories of every stupid thing you’ve ever done, or every bad thing that ever happened”
And it dawned on me like a 200 watt light bulb going on right over my head. My retrieval mechanism sucks because it’s what i have instead of the ability to forget. There are so many things in my head that I don’t want to look at, that are as clear in my memory as the day I witnessed them, that I wish I could make go away. Instead, I’m not very good at accessing those memories, and that has been a sort of a blessing.

My memory works like yours, too, Og.
what you are saying reminds me of this comic that you posted… a while back.

Thanks for the memories.
Good thing there isn’t enough RAM memory to remember it all at once, ya know? ;)
Yesterday, for no reason, I was driving along and the memory of one of the dumbest, most embarrassing and awkward moments of my life came floating up, all crystal-clear and completely unbidden, just triggered by some random chain of associations…
Yeah, it’s enough to make one wish for a worse memory.
What cond said.
I used to have an excellent memory, especially for conversations (I could remember them verbatim, always.)
As I get older, my memory seems to be deteriorating, except for random snippets of trivia. The one big exception to this is BAD memories. Why can’t I remember the good stuff? No clue. I guess I’m just wired to recall all the humiliating, stupid shit I’ve said and done over the years (all the way back to early childhood), and beat myself up about it. Humans are weird critters. Me especially. ;)
So, based on the story, you have created your own flawed memory management system?
Just curious as that seems to be the end of the arc.
I know my ram floats things up that happened decades ago from time to time and I wonder why. I suppose I use them as learning to remember why I do something now I did not do then.
That or God is reminding me of something. Take your pick.
Paul, if I could take a few things out of my head and put them in yours, you’d suckstart a mossberg in ten seconds. Trust me on this: you have no business trying to interpret my actions or motivations. This is not about remembering a time I almost didn’t wear pants to school, this is about the vivid and clear memory of my uncle’s blood on my hand as I pulled the dogtags out of his shotgun-perforated chest cavity to confirm identity for the dr at the morgue where I identified the body. That’s one of the GOOD memories I’m not afraid of.
I’ve seen most of the ways people can be assholes to one another, up close, and I’ve never shut my eyes or turned away. Not having those images in front of my eyes all day every day is what I’m talking about here.
There are days I have trouble remembering my own name; but you can be damn sure I remember every single mistake, fuckup, and dick move I’ve ever made.
I asked for the “photographic memory” and got the “pornographic memory” instead.
My nephew is pulling bodies out of Japan, right now, and that’s gonna stick with him a while…
God Bless him, ed!
I am the opposite. I can hardly remember anything. Make the same stupid mistakes over and over. But I am at the age where childhood memories come flooding back crystal clear. But not all of them. Too bad we can’t split our brains and each take half! ;-)
“My brain is full!”

Og, you have my sympathies on the memories you carry. Thought you had come up with a way to change the way a mind works. Nothing could make be eat a bullet, I know that for a fact. Would not want to have done what you have, some anyway.
Sorry if I ruffled any feathers, my friend.
No sweat, dude. Just struck me odd, like you thought somehow the memory of photographing crime scenes was a wondeful gift from God.
“I’ve seen most of the ways people can be assholes to one another, up close, and I’ve never shut my eyes or turned away. ”
There are a variety of different kinds of assholes out there and to a varying degree.
Several years ago I had mentioned here that overt verbal threats were pathetic gestures by simpletons and newbs (if you remember, some politician started issuing threats at a ‘nearby’ blog and the discussion was carried over here) that the law can resolve and eventually neuter the individual. It is the man who threatens you without leaving a trace or trail that are the ones that really are of concern.
I’ve experienced it in my life, but I could never really put into a neat and concise narration where I could pass the info on to you and your friends. Last night, I came across an audio that did just that.
Here it is:
http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/419/petty-tyrant
This guy is an archtype. In the end he made some obvious mistakes which eventually led to his destruction. There are assholes out there who have perfected this form of predation and many times, the law cannot hope to deal with that form of individual.
The audio is about 50 minutes so its perfect for the commute to work (if you have an android or something of that sort).
cond0010: there’s a cheap program called TotalRecorder from HighCriteria.com.
It allows you to capture audio from your computer and convert it into many different formats (including mp3).
I record talk radio every day with it to listen on the hour long drive to an from.
Thanks Ed.
Not this “”thought somehow the memory of photographing crime scenes was a wondeful gift from God.””
More I thought you had a way to forget them.
Keep the sunny side up.
