2d is dead
has been, for a long time now. The oldschool morons like Autodesk are still selling their 2d cad products, but Solidworks, a superior product in just about every way, now offers it’s 2d cad free as a download here. Draftsight is quick and clean, and easy to learn to use- if you’ve ever needed a drafting tool, let me recommend this one highly.
Update: Downloaded it myself, to the home computer. It’s a nice piece of software, but the good news is it’s available for OS-x, and Ubuntu linux.

Thanks for the pointer. I need a few simple plans for building permits and SketchUp ain’t the right tool.
I’ve had a chance to download the program and take a look at it, and I think it’s exactly what I needed. Best of all, it’s free! So I don’t have to decide whether I want it on the desktop or laptop, and more importantly I can spend my money on hobby stuff, not a CAD program. Which is a good thing because hobby stuff can be expensive.
Siemens did the same with Solid Edge:

It’s compatible with Autodesk and has tutorials.
But in general I dislike Siemens on principle.
I wouldn’t put a piece of siemens software on my computer at gunpoint.
