If you have a Kindle
And you love adventure stories, and you like victorian fiction, go to Project Gutenberg and download the H Rider Haggard books about Alan Quatermain.
I read them when I was very young. I re-read them- for free- on my vacation. Highly reccomended.
Quatermain has been portrayed well and badly, from Sean Connery to that idiot Richard Chamberlain, from Stewart Grainger to Patrick Swayze.
It has been my personal experience that with rare exception, the movie that plays in my head when I read a good book is far superior to anything Hoillywood can do. if this is your experience too, and you haven’t read these books, or haven’t read them in a while, read them now. You’ll appreciate it.

Yes, back before we had to worry about being PC, back when you shot a man-eating animal regardless of how it made anyone feel, back when it was OKAY to carry a gun and drink a shot of hard liquor at the same time, back before property taxes and socialism–
Why can’t we go back to those days? *sigh*
I knew of Project Gutenberg, yet somehow did not think of when searching for free books (like finding gold in the gutter).
Thank you for reminding me… and making it clear there are not enough hours in the day to read as I wish.
Read a lot of Haggard’s books as a kid; they’re still good.
Reading “King Solomon’s Mines” on the K-Pad even as we speak. Good Stuff!
Here’s another good read from Gutenberg that is not fiction, but reads like a Quatermain adventure:
THE MAN-EATERS OF TSAVO AND
Other East African Adventures
BY
Lieut.-Col. J. H. Patterson, D.S.O.
I have them on worn paperpacks, and in Spanish, to boot.
Hopefully I will be gifted an e-reader for Christmas…
Reading the Quatermain stories now.
And I have got to get a Kindle
LC & Firehand: You realize that you can download a free Kindle app for your laptop, notebook, and smartphone?
I’m looking forward to the Quartermain stories, og, Thanks.
Thanks for the link. Thanks also for a previous recommendation on the African hunting adventure as it was very enjoyable as well.
My dad worked on the mainframes at u of I where/when the project started. They have lotsa Kipling, too. “Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free. “
Thanks for the suggestion, and yes, the movie in my head is incomparably better than the movie made by some overpaid Hollywood clowns.
I’ve seen project Gutenburg elswhere, but thought the texts were merely pdf or some sort.
Problem is I don’t have a laptop, notebook or smartphone
a regular computer will work.
