Rick Perry
Is an establishment boy from way back. I’m not too sure about him yet, but Dick linked me to this bit about what is being said about him.
It’s a reasonable piece. It addresses a lot of the issues that the media has saddled him with, and does so fairly even handedly.
It still doesn’t address my concerns, which are many, but can be boiled down to this: Will he be Bush 45?
I’m surrounded by a lot of bush bashers on the left and right- I don’t, because though I intensely disliked a lot of his policies and he never seemed to see a spending bill he wouldn’t sign, he acted more or less properly as the Commander in Chief in time of national crisis (imagine if it had been Gore or kerry!!!!!!) and took the conflict to the enemy instead of letting it come here anymore.
Yes, homeland security is a joke, yes, the patriot act is shit, yadda yadda. Once again: Imagine if it had been Gore or Kerry.
Anyway. Perry has issues. All of them have issues. I want to be convinced that Perry’s issues will not become mine. I want to be convinced Perry can undo the damage caused by four years of wingnuthead. I know for sure that Bachman cannot, she is embarking on a campaign of being ignored and abused by the press, and since she’s not a beltway insider if she did hold the office nobody would help her. Ron Paul is and always will be a joke, he’s the goddamned Dennis Kucinich of the right.
Let me just say this about Newt:
It seems as if Perry is the guy who can win, if anyone can. I want to be convinced he’s worth it.

At this point, I think even Romney would be a better President than the current incumbent. I know that’s not saying much. But I think Perry is probably the best we can do. Unless of course somebody talks Paul Ryan into running.

I know what you mean but unfortunately Perry is probably going to be the nominee and I think has the best chance to beat the idiot in office right now.

I, also, hope that the dems are loading up an arsenal to begin shooting themselves in the feet. Two million taxpayer bucks to buy two buses for a three day tour is a good start.
I’m with Joan. I’d like to hear more from the folks that got sidelined by the Republicans–McCotter and even Johnson. Not saying that either of them would be better and right now Perry is looking heads and shoulders above anyone else, but a true choice–not a party or media choice would be nice.

I think it will be perry/bachman. The reps have to elect a minority, but bachman is Obama on the right, so she would be the best second bannana.
I like perry’s annoucement speech, I like what he has done with texas (I know he did not do it alone) I like the fact he was a PIC and as such has had life or death authority over more that himself.
I do not think they will be able to attain office, not due to electability, but more due the fact I think the 2008 election was the last one that will go the full mile.

I’ve had my problems with Perry, but we’ve made nice-nice as far as I’m concerned. Texans had a ‘come to Cthulhu’ meeting with him on Gardasil and the Trans-Texas Corridor. While I think the Gardasil thing is fundamentally a good idea, the state shouldn’t mandate or fund it. As a parent (by proxy) and a biologist, I do think it makes sense to immunize kids. The TTC was just a land grab as far as most of us are concerned. Seems like Spain had this place in the past, and we’re not anxious to lease it back to them after bisecting a quarter-mile wide strip from here to yonder. That dog won’t hunt.
The man wore the uniform and flew C130’s. He carries concealed, and he can spell secession. I may have voted for Kinky last time, but I was pissed for the reasons in the previous paragraph. I have a lot fewer issues with him than anyone else, except McCotter, but unfortunately he’s a non-starter.
I think it was Rush who said “I would vote for Elmer Fudd if it would get Obama out of the White House!”, and I tend to agree,
but GOD, I am sick of trying to pick the lesser weevil to hold my nose and vote for.
As an Austin politition he had to make some over the isle gestures, but I think if you add it all up, twelve years of running Texas to a plus is what this country needs.
Is he W? No.
Constitution? Yes.
As the Pres his, as any Pres, will be effective only by his appointments.
To my uneducated mind I’ll probably go with a Perry/Cain, Bachman, or even Palin ticket.
