Sixteen years ago today
I visited mother and child in the hospital, and held the Oglet for the very first time.
She was tiny. Sweaty hair and baby smell, she nestled into the crook of my arm.
Then, there, the most irresponsible human on earth felt the enormous responsibility settle in all around him, and instead of feeling like the burden of sysiphus, it felt like a thick, warm blanket.
I have been extremely lucky, in that she’s a moral and decent and hardworking kid who shows no signs of being the kind of trouble i was. She’s also smart and has a huge heart.
Sixteen years ago, I didn’t know any of that. She snuggled against me and urped on my arm, it ran down my bicep and dripped off my elbow onto the floor. She had marked her territory; I was forever hers. God himself cannot change that.
I doubt he would want to, anyway. Thank you, Creator of the Universe, Author of Natural Law, Father of all things animate and inanimate, for showing me it didn’t hurt to be responsible. For giving me a reason to settle in. For sending me this wonderful gift. I can’t ever do anything to deserve it, or earn it, but I’ll keep on trying anyway.

Praise the Lord for your gift!
My lads are 22 and 24 this fall.
It’s been a great ride and I’m so proud of them.
Good on ya!
Amen
Fatherhood is a wonderful thing isn’t it?
Hell, I am still trying to be half the man my father was, and yet I ended up with 3 boys, who managed to turn into rather outstanding young men, despite my clumsy attempts at fatherhood. The same thing goes for the four I inherited from Deb.
Willing to bet you are one heck of a father.
So are second-hand birthday greetings in order? If so: Happy Birthday, Oglet!
Sweet Sixteen! And many more!

Happy birthday to a very funny, wicked smart, and extremely hard-working young woman!
From me and my gals to you and your gal… Happy Birthday… sounds like she’s a great kid!
My little gal recently hit sixteen too…

Yep, awe inspiring how they have been bestowed with the power to transform many of us. Only many. Pity the ear-bud people. It’s your soul that had to be willing. With some people, that transformation is proof that miracles never cease.
Happy Birthday, Oglet!
You are each other’s gift. :)
Happy birthday and best wishes to the young lady.
Happy Birthday, Oglet!
Awww. Well said.
Many many happy returns.
And I believe that a small amount of luck is necessary … it’s greatly outweighed by “just doin’ the right thing”.
Enjoy the moments.
Happy birthday to the Oglet.
The first time I picked up my son, now nine, he gave a a smile and I put him in the crook of my arm and he proceed to lose his first movement all over my shirt.
I think he has made up for that and I hope he turns out OK.
The other two, one is in the Air Force and the other is a senior at one of the state u’s. Both of those are girls.
I am not sure what, if any thing I did right, but they don’t seem to hold that against me.
Congratulations to all.
Hopefully the next sixteen years will be just as good.
Happy Birthday to the Oglet and congratulations to her proud pop.
Happy birthday to her, and I’m ‘sure’ you had some input into her attitude Og!
Happy Birthday oglet!
Happy Birthday, Oglet! God bless you.
What a great day to celebrate. Happy Birthday to the Oglet.
Sixteen! What an age, the whole world is before you with endless possibilities. Congratulations and continue to make your parents proud, you’ll be glad you did!
Og, my oldest is turning 32 here in a few days. I remember her teens with warmth and I’ve almost forgotten the painful moments. She has children now and her mother and I have discovered a new twist to parenthood as we guide her down her own path of parenting. Something for you to look forward to!
Happy birthday young lady!
Celebrate her presence each and every day for Life gives us no guarantees.
May God Bless You Always…
All The Best,

Happy sixteenth, Oglet! I look back on my little girl when she was sixteen and am reminded of an old saying. “Guns don’t kill people, Fathers of pretty daughters kill people.”
nd they say music tames the heart of the Beast. Oh no…
