Riding the storm out
Drove home from a side gig through a thrashing storm last night. Pouring rain and sheet lightning, cars slowed to a crawl. I found a semi headed northbound at 70 and stayed a half mile behind him, we did fine. I had the Ipod plugged into the stereo and I rode that storm with Tom Waits and Etta James and Toy Caldwell and JS Bach. On Shuffle the ipod did some weird superimpositions, like “Goldberg variations” on top of “This old cowboy” but it worked for me. Love a rainstorm, especially driving in one.

Ooo, no thanks! I love driving and I love storms, but not together. I’m too leery of bad drivers, and I try too hard to see more than is visible. No relaxation there!
The worse the weather, the more fun. Drives my GF nuts.
One time, had to drive from Souix Falls, SD to just above Texas. There was a small blizzard in front, and one huge blizzard right behind. If I stopped, was going to get snowed in for awhile.
Dogzard, was the GF along? Would be a good test, pick a motel with a resturant and wait out the storm. Worse things could happen.
ALthough I don’t mind driving in nasty stuff myself. When pointed I have a nasty case of get-there-itis.
Sorry, on that trip with the blizzard, had escorted my parents up there in a motorhome. There were some things that had to get done at home, along with some medical issues, so just kept driving.
GF doesn’t understand how I can have fun when the weather is bad.
Was cutting between I-95 and I-64 on 295. Heavy thunderstorm coming in from the west with the last movement of Beethoven’s 9th on the stereo.
Music by Beethoven and special effects by God. Doesn’t get better than that.
I remember back in, hmm, must have been around ’97 or ’98, driving the Escort on the PA turnpike (under reconstruction at the time) in a blizzard, at night, with the two available lanes being the right lane and the shoulder. And an immediate drop-off down the mountain just to the right of the shoulder.
Yeah, good times, good times. Ridin’ the storm out…
