For my oldest and best friend in the world
without further comment.
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
But when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie–
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years that nature permits
Are closing in asthma or tumors or fits
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers, or loaded guns.
Then you will find–its your own affair
But–you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will
When the whimper of welcome is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone–wherever it goes–for good,
You still discover how much you care
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.
We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em the more do we grieve;
For when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short time loan is as bad as a long–
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
Rudyard Kipling.
The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven, not man’s.
– Letter to W. D. Howells, April 2, 1899
Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.
– Mark Twain, a Biography
Godspeed, my furry little friend.

I’m sorry.
Betty, the nurse Basset. Norman, the biggest 20 lb dog ever. Tucker, the boys’ first best friend. Tom, the fearless. Plenty of company, new friends to play with, for your best friend. Many, many of us understand your pain, know your sorrow.
My condolences.
Regards,
Is it dusty in here?
My condolences. Kipling certainly had the right of it.

I’m sorry Og.
“God will prepare everything for our perfect happiness in heaven, and if it takes my dog being there, I believe he’ll be there.” Billy Graham
Or my personal favorite:
“No Heaven will ever Heaven be, unless my cats are there to welcome me.”
Sorry, man.
One measure of a man is how he cares for his dog.
A superlative human achievement, would be to become the kind of man that our dogs and cats believe us to be.
Words are never enough, can never suffice, but know that you have my condolences, and prayers.

Sorry, Og…:(
My condolences.
Max died?? Oh, man…I’m so sorry.
No, partner’s dog.
God loves dogs. That’s why He gave them such staunch hearts and pure devotion. Bless you all in your sorrow.
Please send my condolences. If not mine, then on behalf of a close friend of mine who just lost his dear friend.
I’m so sorry for your loss, Og.
There is no heartbreak the same.
Og, please let Partner know he has my condolences. I wish I knew how to ease his pain.
I’m sad right there with you, buddy…

Tell Partner in Grime I am so sorry. I don’t want to think about the day I’ll have to say goodbye.
I’m coming up the last weekend of the Oct. Will see you all then.
We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It’s the best deal man has ever made.
I’m so sorry.
