Doing it first.
There are a LOT of things that work a lot better if you remember to do them first- yesterday’s post, for instance: I learned a while ago that if you take Advil before beginning a major project the project doesn’t wreck you nearly as badly. My dr recently turned me on to the combination of 1000 mg Tylenol plus 600 mg Advil, which works even better. I also learned a long time ago that a little squirt of dish soap in your hand, rubbed thoroughly into your hands and forearms and allowed to dry, will make cleanup after a brake job way easier. My feet don’t hurt hardly at all after a days work if I remember to put on my work boots first. And if I’m going to be outdoors working, nothing saves the old boys like a generous dose of Gold Bond green. And I will often rub on some Sombra just as I’m going to be doing something like splitting wood.
Of course we all know about putting on condoms, etc.
Anyway, as I age I’m getting to the point where I remember to do these things more, possibly as a measure of self-preservation. Pity I never got this smart when I was younger, I might not be so fucked up these days.

If NSAIDs dont screw up your stomach, I’ve found Lodine (etodolac) to be the best anti-inflammatory I’ve ever used; both for relief, and for prophylaxis.
I’m on 2x500mg per day as my normal dosage, and it keeps my joint pain to a tolerable level. I have a stock of 400s as well, and I use them before I expect to be working with my hands etc…
Some people find it aggravates their stomach however.
Yeah, i get grief from that and naproxyn. Aleve is ok, but naprox guarantees 3 days of stomach upset, lodine similar.
The Tylenol/Advil combo sounds like it’s worth a try. I’ll be doing more heavy lifting this week (yet again!), and it’d be best to avoid the soreness.
The Gold Bond Green? That stuff is Da Bomb. Good on the feet; good on the Ol’ Nutsack.
I still haven’t learned the lesson of sunscreen.
Amen on the lessons learned.
Ditto on the Tylenol/Naproxen combo. I have chronic lumbar pain, was doing 600mg naproxen/day just to keep moving, and had to do a lot of Flexeril (no driving or reloading with THAT dope!).
I’ve started on 400 mg Naproxen and 1000 mg tylenol two weeks ago (half that twice a day), and the results are: 30% less pain, down to two-per-day on the meds, NO increase in GI issues (but I take Prilosec, so there wouldn’t be any).
BTW, I heard this from a floor nurse at Peacehealth Riverbend hospital in Springfield, OR, and they have those nurses SELLING the program. I then asked the Doctor-Daughter about it, and she said that there are scads of patients who WERE dependent on Tylenol 3 or Darvon, who are now successfully stepped down to the Tylenol/NSAID combos.
I was at the store and bought some drain cleaner (long hair clogs the drain), and while I was at it threw in a package of bacon and some Jameson. They card now under 40. I get carded a fair amount, but this time the clerk looked closely at the ID, then at me, then at the ID, then at me and said “You do NOT look Fifty (mumble mumble)! What’s your secret?” I looked at her and said “bacon and Jameson and drain cleaner”.
OK, it’s sunscreen and good genes.
BTW, no cosmetologist will ever recommend it, but before doing REALLY ugly work on the greasy undersides of vehicles, I rub my hands with fresh motor oil, then wipe them down with a Red Rag. Does two things, makes the grime MUCH easier to remove (with more fresh oil, to start with), and puts a nice coat of fresh oil on a Red Rag, to help it do it’s job of wiping/protecting metal.
I used to do the same with EP2 or better grease.
A lot of evidence says grease/oil isn’t so good for your skin, but the soap does work well enough. Assuming you do remember.
Another thing I DIDN’T remember this morning was to take the nsaid coctail before eating, the advil is easiest on my gut, but still gives me some greif if i don’t have a bite just after I take it.
Yeah, I find dish soap works even better than pumice soap as a first attack.
When you have an ancient diesel that has a cannister style oil filter (not a screw on…), you get farkin’ dirty changing the oil.
My M35A2 Deuce has a pair of those oil filters, three fuel filters, and over 50 zerks IIRC.
Which remindeth me: it’s time to do the Winter PM!
BTW, Og, what body part do you put that condom on before splitting wood? I presume that IS wood that you’re splitting?
I told the kids once that “I AM that bumper sticker, the one that says ‘If I’d known I’d live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself’.”
Y’all might want to re-think the Tylenol. My sis worked for a research doc, who did a lot of study using V A Vets back in the 70’s. He told her to avoid using it, as they were seeing a lot of liver damage, even at recommended dosage levels. I think this was back when it was still a presciption med.
BTW,
for cleaning your work clothes, use Goop. IIRC, Walmart stocks it, maybe Target, and some auto parts stores.
Get the version without pumice. Plain white cream type. Rub it into grease/oil stains, let stand for 15-20 minutes, then toss into washing machine. Will remove even old stains from denim, that have been washed and dried multiple times. After using it, I normally run the wash again with the normal soap, as the Goop leaves a slight odor that I notice. I keep one of the small 1 lb tubs with my laundry soaps.
The only work stain that it won’t entirely remove is used diesel oil. You may see a field of black spots remaining, but it will look a lot better.
Cleans your hands, without needing any grit that chews them up. Still, I normally use hand dish-washing soap, but too often in one day will dry out the skin, leading to cracks.
