Sometimes, it all comes together.
I have come to the conclusion that animals can hear humans thinking. I know if I’m laying in bed sound asleep, and I wake up, long before I even make a move or any noise, the dog will wake up in the living room, and come sit outside the door waiting for me to take him outside.
Similarly, if i sit in a treestand and read or think about anything, the deer never show up, only, apparently, when I’m in the zone just above awareness and just below reason. So I learned long ago to turn off the head as I hunt. I hobbled off to the treestand, climbed my butt up it and sat, saying my morning prayers.
I thought how nice it was, and how nice was the day. Then I went into the zone. I hadn’t quite finished my morning coffee, and it wasn’t hard to drift off. I wasn’t thinking about anything in particular, I wasn’t processing anything, I just sat in the stand stupid as a democrat. Less than a half hour in, just as the light grew strong, a decent buck wandered into the trees across from me. Eight points, hundred and a half on the hoof, maybe a bit more.
I could hear my heartbeat in my ears. I rested my elbow on the edge of the deerstand. I welded my cheek down to the stock, and parked the Bushnell just in front of my eye.
I pulled the hammer back. I had chambered a round just as I got in the stand so I was ready. Several large trees obscured my view.
The deer took a few steps forward. I felt the trigger take up the slack and stick just before the break.
My heart beat
I pulled the trigger.
The bullet went through and through. Later, I found the plug of hair it punched out the other side.
The deer ran twenty feet, and dropped
My heart beat again.
One shot pierced both lungs just above the heart, and he was gone in less than a minute. I was thankful it was quick.
I unloaded the rifle, lowered it back down to the ground, and climbed down from the stand.
After being skunked hard last year, I was grateful to have the opportunity. I cannot adequately express my gratitude to reader N5 for allowing me to hunt on his private land, and then helping me to dress the deer afterwards.
And I have two hunts left!
Good not to be skunked, this year. And for the first time I have a pair of antlers I can mount on a plaque and display- not nice enough for a mount but I’ll screw them on a board and hang it on the wall. 8 points, and not unattractive.

Good shootin,’ Tex.
Nice! Load up that freezer.
Congrads on the deer. Closest I have gotten is I almost took one out on the way to work the other day. Guys at work will be bringing in the deer jerky pretty soon. Good eating.
Congratulations! Your season is successful and you still have season left. Sounds like it’s all good and I’m glad for you. (Wish you had that cart we’ve been discussing?)

Congrats Sir!
I have had several old timers tell me if you have the predator mind-set the animals can sense it. Don’t know if it’s true, but I have shot more deer waking up from a nap than watching for them.
Neighbor just dropped off a nice doe. He has a block permit so he brings me a few a year. Love it when the are dropped off gutted and ready to process. Need to get into the woods though.

Sweet!
Outstanding Og!! Rich, yeah there isn’t much that beats a good piece of venison jerky!
I miss all the skinning I used to do for my dad around this time of year. All the customers who used bow or bullet brought their field dressed kill into Dad’s business for skinning and processing. I got some good work out of it and Dad kept the customers happy.
Roger, if you end up with any spares I’ll gladly take them off your hands… *drool*….
oops
Grats, Og.
I’ll be heading to COSTCO tomorrow. I plan to bag a few pounds of cow and some chips.
Good shooting. If you take the head and put it in a pot, keep the antlers clear, add water and Borax soap ( anout 1/2 cup or so) set over a fire where the pot can boil and let it set for about 6 hours. Clean of the scum and you will have a perfect clean skull for an european mount.
Works good.
The low wake is good for getting them in for some reason. I have had them walk in while I watch, but I have had more appear fully formed in the target zone than any other way.
It is a great day when you can go into the woods and bring something out.
Congrats Og!
My neighbor makes fair knives out of files and antlers.
Just a thought.
What did you shoot it with? Just curious.
A good friend of mine will not look straight at a deer until he is ready to shoot. He has had too many deer read his mind.
Well shot. Congrats!
Ditto the friend of True Blue Sam. Venision on the half-shell certainly can sense a predatory stare.
Then again though, I like the olde joke about wearing a camoflauge cap, so people can’t see what’cher thinking. (Larry the Cable Guy? dunno, I forgot the source…..)
But anyway, hell yeah and CONGRATS, Og! That was a nice shot, regardless of implement used. Sounds like about a zero meat wastage factor, too.
Bon apetit!

He dropped that buck like a bad habit. And he dressed it like a pro, with almost no wasted meat.
Congrats on the successful hunt. Ditto on the mind reading. I have seen this happen many times. If you are thinking about killing they will pick up on that right away. Enjoy the meat! Are you going to tan the hide?
Matt: I’ve never tried. I’d like to, fur on, but I don’t know how much grief it is.
Congratulations!
